ப்ரீத்யா தை³த்யஸ்தவ தனுமஹ:ப்ரேக்ஷணாத் ஸர்வதா²பி
த்வாமாராத்⁴யன்னஜித ரசயன்னஞ்ஜலிம் ஸஞ்ஜகா³த³ ।
மத்த: கிம் தே ஸமபி⁴லஷிதம் விப்ரஸூனோ வத³ த்வம்
வித்தம் ப⁴க்தம் ப⁴வனமவனீம் வாபி ஸர்வம் ப்ரதா³ஸ்யே ॥1॥
Meaning
ப்ரீத்யா - pleased; தை³த்ய:-தவ - the Asura, Thy; தனும்-அஹ:- - majestic form, oh!; ப்ரேக்ஷணாத் - on seeing; ஸர்வதா²-அபி - in every way; த்வாம்-ஆராத்⁴யன் - honouring Thee; அஜித - O Invincible One!; ரசயன்-அஞ்ஜலிம் - with folded palms; ஸஞ்ஜகா³த்³ - said; மத்த: - 'from me; கிம் தே ஸமபி⁴லஷிதம் - what by you is desired; விப்ரஸூனோ வத³ த்வம் - O Braahmin boy! you say; வித்தம் ப⁴க்தம் ப⁴வனம்-அவனீம் - wealth, food, house, land,; வா-அபி ஸர்வம் - or even all of them; ப்ரதா³ஸ்யே - I shall give';
Translation
Impressed on seeing Thy glorious majestic sight, the Asura Bali honoured and worshipped Thee in every way. He said with folded palms 'What do you desire from me? O Braahmin boy, you say, is it wealth, food, house or land or everything. I shall give you all.'
ஶ்லோக:
தாமீக்ஷணாம் ப³லிகி³ரமுபாகர்ண்ய காருண்யபூர்ணோ-
ப்யஸ்யோத்ஸேகம் ஶமயிதுமனா தை³த்யவம்ஶம் ப்ரஶம்ஸன் ।
பூ⁴மிம் பாத³த்ரயபரிமிதாம் ப்ரார்த²யாமாஸித² த்வம்
ஸர்வம் தே³ஹீதி து நிக³தி³தே கஸ்ய ஹாஸ்யம் ந வா ஸ்யாத் ॥2॥
Meaning
தாம்-அக்ஷீணாம் ப³லி-கி³ரம்- - that bold voice of Bali; உபாகர்ண்ய - on hearing; காருண்ய-பூர்ண:-அபி - though full of compassion; அஸ்ய-உத்ஸேகம் - his (Bali's) pride; ஶமயிதுமனா - desirous of curbing; தை³த்ய-வம்ஶம் ப்ரஶம்ஸன் - the lineage of the Asuras praising; பூ⁴மிம் பாத-³த்ரய-பரிமிதாம் - earth, by three steps (of thy feet) measurable; ப்ரார்த²யாமாஸித² த்வம் - asked for Thou; ஸர்வம் தே³ஹி-இதி - give everything' thus; து நிக³தி³தே - indeed having said; கஸ்ய ஹாஸ்யம் - whose sneer (ridicule); ந வா ஸ்யாத் - would not be invited;
Translation
On hearing those bold words of Bali, though filled with compassion Thou were desirous of curbing his pride. Speaking highly of the generosity of the Asura clan, Thou asked for earth measurable by Thy three steps. To ask for all, would have invited sneer from everyone.
ஶ்லோக:
விஶ்வேஶம் மாம் த்ரிபத³மிஹ கிம் யாசஸே பா³லிஶஸ்த்வம்
ஸர்வாம் பூ⁴மிம் வ்ருணு கிமமுனேத்யாலபத்த்வாம் ஸ த்³ருப்யன் ।
யஸ்மாத்³த³ர்பாத் த்ரிபத³பரிபூர்த்யக்ஷம: க்ஷேபவாதா³ன்
ப³ந்த⁴ம் சாஸாவக³மத³தத³ர்ஹோபி கா³டோ⁴பஶாந்த்யை ॥3॥
Meaning
விஶ்வேஶம் மாம் - (who is ) the lord of the three worlds, to me; த்ரிபத³ம்-இஹ கிம் யாசஸே - for (mere) three paces of earth, how do you ask; பா³லிஶ:-த்வம் - simpleton you; ஸர்வாம் பூ⁴மிம் வ்ருணு - the whole earth ask for; கிம்-அமுனா- - of what use is this; இதி-ஆலபத்-த்வாம் - thus telling Thee; ஸ த்³ருப்யன் - he (said) proudly; யஸ்மாத்-த³ர்பாத் - because of which pride; த்ரிபத-³பரிபூர்தி-அக்ஷம: - three paces even fully failing (to give); க்ஷேபவாதா³ன் - and inviting ridicule; ப³ந்த⁴ம் ச- - and bondage; அஸௌ-அக³மத்- - this (Bali) was subjected to (received); அதத³ர்ஹ:-அபி - (though) not deserving even; கா³டோ⁴பஶாந்த்யை - for (acquiring) complete detachment;
Translation
To me, who is the lord of all the three worlds how do you ask for mere three paces of earth? You simpleton! Of what use is this? Ask for the whole earth.' Thus he proudly told Thee. Because of this pride he failed to give fully even three paces of earth and invited ridicule and bondage. Bali did not deserve it but he was subjected to all this for acquiring complete detachment.

பாத³த்ரய்யா யதி³ ந முதி³தோ விஷ்டபைர்னாபி துஷ்யே-
தி³த்யுக்தேஸ்மின் வரத³ ப⁴வதே தா³துகாமேத² தோயம் ।
தை³த்யாசார்யஸ்தவ க²லு பரீக்ஷார்தி²ன: ப்ரேரணாத்தம்
மா மா தே³யம் ஹரிரயமிதி வ்யக்தமேவாப³பா⁴ஷே ॥4॥
Meaning
பாத³த்ரய்யா - with three steps; யதி³ ந முதி³த: - if (one) is not satisfied; விஷ்டபை:-ன-அபி - even by the three worlds will not; துஷ்யேத்- - be satisfied; இதி-உக்தே-அஸ்மின் - thus having said to him; வரத³ - O Bestower of Boons!; ப⁴வதே தா³துகாமே-அத² - then, to Thee as (he) was wanting to give; தோயம் - water; தை³த்ய-ஆசார்ய:- - the Asuras' Guru (Shukraacharya); தவ க²லு பரீக்ஷார்தி²ன: - indeed by Thy desire to test (Bali); ப்ரேரணாத்- - (and by) Thy prompting; தம் மா மா தே³யம் - to him, do not do not give; ஹரி:-அயம்-இதி - Hari this is, thus; வ்யக்தம்-ஏவ-ஆப³பா⁴ஷே - openly (clearly) told (him);
Translation
O Bestower of Boons! When Thou told him that he who is not satisfied with three steps of land will not be satisfied even by the three worlds, Bali was about to pour the pre-gift oblation water to Thee. To test Bali's integrity, and so by Thy prompting the Guru of Asuras, Shukraachaarya, told him clearly to refrain from giving the gift since Thou were Hari.

யாசத்யேவம் யதி³ ஸ ப⁴க³வான் பூர்ணகாமோஸ்மி ஸோஹம்
தா³ஸ்யாம்யேவ ஸ்தி²ரமிதி வத³ன் காவ்யஶப்தோபி தை³த்ய: ।
விந்த்⁴யாவல்யா நிஜத³யிதயா த³த்தபாத்³யாய துப்⁴யம்
சித்ரம் சித்ரம் ஸகலமபி ஸ ப்ரார்பயத்தோயபூர்வம் ॥5॥
Meaning
யாசதி-ஏவம் யதி³ - begging thus if He is; ஸ ப⁴க³வான் - That Lord; பூர்ணகாம:-அஸ்மி - the one whose desires are fulfilled; ஸ:-அஹம் - that I am; தா³ஸ்யாமி-ஏவ ஸ்தி²ரம்-இதி வத³ன் - (I) shall give, certainly, thus saying; காவ்ய-ஶப்த:-அபி தை³த்ய: - though cursed by Kaavya (Shukraachaarya); விந்த்⁴யாவல்யா - by Vindhyaavalya; நிஜ-த³யிதயா - by his wife; த³த்த-பாத்³யாய துப்⁴யம் - to Thee whom the water for washing the feet had already been given; சித்ரம் சித்ரம் - how wonderful; ஸகலம்-அபி ஸ - everything also he (Bali); ப்ரார்பயத்-தோய-பூர்வம் - offered even before the water;
Translation
Bali firmly said that he would consider himself blessed if the Lord himself comes begging to him thus, and so he would certainly make the gift. For such a disobedience Kaavya, (Shukraachaarya) cursed him. Then, to Thee whose feet had already been washed by the waters poured by Bali's wife Vindhyaavali, he proceeded to offer everything with the pouring of the water. How wonderful!
ஶ்லோக:
நிஸ்ஸந்தே³ஹம் தி³திகுலபதௌ த்வய்யஶேஷார்பணம் தத்³-
வ்யாதன்வானே முமுசு:-ருஷய: ஸாமரா: புஷ்பவர்ஷம் ।
தி³வ்யம் ரூபம் தவ ச ததி³த³ம் பஶ்யதாம் விஶ்வபா⁴ஜா-
முச்சைருச்சைரவ்ருத⁴த³வதீ⁴க்ருத்ய விஶ்வாண்ட³பா⁴ண்ட³ம் ॥6॥
Meaning
நிஸ்ஸந்தே³ஹம் - without any doubt or hesitation; தி³திகுலபதௌ - (when) by the Asura king; த்வயி-அஶேஷ-அர்பணம் - to Thee everything was offered; தத் வ்யாதன்வானே - and that was given; முமுசு: ருஷய: - showered sages; ஸாமரா: - along with the Devas; புஷ்பவர்ஷம் - a rain of flowers; தி³வ்யம் ரூபம் தவ ச - and that divine form of thine (as Vaamana); தத்-இத³ம் பஶ்யதாம் - that which was seen; விஶ்வபா⁴ஜாம்- - by the inhabitants of the three worlds; உச்சை:-உச்சை:-அவ்ருத⁴த்- - higher and higher increased (grew); அவதீ⁴க்ருத்ய - extending to the dimension; விஶ்வ-அண்ட-³பா⁴ண்ட³ம் - of the world's cosmic sphere;
Translation
When the Asura king Bali, without any doubt and hesitation offered and gave to Thee everything, the sages and the Devas shed a rain of flowers. As all the inhabitants of the three worlds looked on, that divine form of Thine as Vaamana, increased higher and higher extending to the dimension of the cosmic sphere.

த்வத்பாதா³க்³ரம் நிஜபத³க³தம் புண்ட³ரீகோத்³ப⁴வோஸௌ
குண்டீ³தோயைரஸிசத³புனாத்³யஜ்ஜலம் விஶ்வலோகான் ।
ஹர்ஷோத்கர்ஷாத் ஸுப³ஹு நன்ருதே கே²சரைருத்ஸவேஸ்மின்
பே⁴ரீம் நிக்⁴னந் பு⁴வனமசரஜ்ஜாம்ப³வான் ப⁴க்திஶாலீ ॥7॥
Meaning
த்வத்-பாத்³-அக்³ரம் - the tip of Thy foot; நிஜ-பத-³க³தம் - (when) it reached its own realm (of Satyaloka); புண்ட³ரீகோத்³ப⁴வ:-அஸௌ - that Brahmaa; குண்டீ³-தோயை:-அஸிசத் - with the water from his kamandalu (jug) washed (the foot); அபுனாத்-யத்-ஜலம் - purified (in the form of Ganga) that water; விஶ்வலோகான் - all the worlds; ஹர்ஷோத்கர்ஷாத் - in ecstasy; ஸுப³ஹு நன்ருதே - very much danced; கே²சரை:- - the Gandharvas and Vidyaadharas; உத்ஸவே-அஸ்மின் - on this auspicious occasion; பே⁴ரீம் நிக்⁴னந் - the drum beating; பு⁴வனம்-அசரத்- - the world went about; ஜாம்ப³வான் ப⁴க்திஶாலீ - Jaambavaan the great devotee;
Translation
As the tip of Thy feet reached its own realm, the Satyalok, Brahmaa washed the foot with the water from his kamandalu-jug. That water, which became Aakaash Ganga, purified all the worlds. The Gandharvaas danced and danced in ecstasy. On this auspicious occasion the great devotee Jaambavaan went around the world beating the drum.
ஶ்லோக:
தாவத்³தை³த்யாஸ்த்வனுமதிம்ருதே ப⁴ர்துராரப்³த⁴யுத்³தா⁴
தே³வோபேதைர்ப⁴வத³னுசரைஸ்ஸங்க³தா ப⁴ங்க³மாபன் ।
காலாத்மாயம் வஸதி புரதோ யத்³வஶாத் ப்ராக்³ஜிதா: ஸ்ம:
கிம் வோ யுத்³தை⁴ரிதி ப³லிகி³ரா தேத² பாதாலமாபு: ॥8॥
Meaning
தாவத்- - then; தை³த்யா:-து- - the Asuras; அனுமதிம்-ருதே ப்⁴ரர்து:- - without the permission of the master (Bali); ஆரப்³த-⁴யுத்³தா⁴: - having started to fight; தே³வ- - O Lord!; உபேதை-ப⁴வத்-அனுசரை:- - Thy emissaries who had approached (come there); ஸங்க³தா: - and opposed; ப⁴ங்க³ம்-ஆபன் - and got defeated (the Asuras); காலாத்மா-அயம் வஸதி புரத: - This is Time incarnate who is standing in front; யத்-வஶாத் ப்ராக்-ஜிதா: ஸ்ம: - by whose favour we had won before (formerly); கிம் வ: யுத்³தை⁴:- - what is the use of our fight?'; இதி ப³லி-கி³ரா - thus by Bali's words; தே-அத² பாதாலம்-ஆபு: - they then took to the Paataal;
Translation
O Lord! The Asuras started to fight with the Devas without their master Bali's permission.They were defeated by Thy emissaries who had come there and were fighting on the Deva's side. Bali told them that the Lord in the form of Time was standing before them by whose grace they had won earlier, and was now against them. So it was no use to fight. At this the Asuras went away to Paataala.

பாஶைர்ப³த்³த⁴ம் பதக³பதினா தை³த்யமுச்சைரவாதீ³-
ஸ்தார்த்தீயீகம் தி³ஶ மம பத³ம் கிம் ந விஶ்வேஶ்வரோஸி ।
பாத³ம் மூர்த்⁴னி ப்ரணய ப⁴க³வன்னித்யகம்பம் வத³ந்தம்
ப்ரஹ்லாத்³ஸ்தம் ஸ்வயமுபக³தோ மானயன்னஸ்தவீத்த்வாம் ॥9॥
Meaning
பாஶை:-ப³த்³த⁴ம் - tied with ropes; பதக³பதினா - by Garuda; தை³த்யம்-உச்சை:-அவாதீ³:- - to the Asura (Thou) loudly said; தார்த்தீயீகம் தி³ஶ மம பத³ம் - the third (place) show my step (to be put); கிம் ந விஶ்வேஶ்வர:-அஸி - are you not the lord of all the worlds; பாத³ம் மூர்த்⁴னி ப்ரணய ப⁴க³வன்- - the foot (step) on (my) head, place,O Lord!; இதி-அகம்பம் வத³ந்தம் - thus (as) he said without any trembling; ப்ரஹ்லாத:³-தம் ஸ்வயம்-உபக³த: - Prahlaad himself came near him; மானயன்-அஸ்தவீத-த்வாம் - praised Thee and sang Thy Praises;
Translation
Garuda, Thy attendant had tied Bali with ropes by this time. Thou asked him loudly, 'Show me the place for my third step. Are you not the lord of the three worlds?' Without any hesitation Bali requested Thee to place Thy foot on his head to measure the third step. Prahlaad himself appeared by Bali's side, praised him and sang hymns of praises to Thee.

த³ர்போச்சி²த்த்யை விஹிதமகி²லம் தை³த்ய ஸித்³தோ⁴ஸி புண்யை-
ர்லோகஸ்தேஸ்து த்ரிதி³வவிஜயீ வாஸவத்வம் ச பஶ்சாத் ।
மத்ஸாயுஜ்யம் பஜ⁴ ச புனரித்யன்வக்³ருஹ்ணா ப³லிம் தம்
விப்ரைஸ்ஸந்தானிதமக²வர: பாஹி வாதாலயேஶ ॥1௦॥
Meaning
த³ர்ப-உச்சி²த்த்யை - to remove your pride completely; விஹிதம்-அகி²லம் - all this was done; தை³த்ய ஸித்³த:⁴-அஸி புண்யை:- - O Asura! you are blessed by your many good deeds; லோக:-தே-அஸ்து - may you rule the (sutala) world; த்ரிதி³வ-விஜயீ - (which may be) superior even to heaven (Swarga); வாஸவ-த்வம் - (the position of ) indra, you (enjoy); ச பஶ்சாத் - and afterwards (in the next Manvantra); மத்-ஸாயுஜ்யம் பஜ⁴ ச புன:- - with Me union enjoy also (attain to) then; இதி-அன்வக்³ருஹ்ணா: ப³லிம் தம் - thus blessing that Bali; விப்ரை:-ஸந்தானித-மக²வர: - (Thou) who had the priests complete the great Yanjya; பாஹி வாதாலயேஶ - O Lord of Guruvaayur! Protect me;
Translation
"O Asura! In order to curb your pride completely, all this was done. You are blessed by your many good deeds. You will rule your region Sutala, which will be superior even to heaven. Later, in the next Manvantra you will become Indra and ultimately you will attain union with me." Blessing Bali thus, Thou had the priests complete the great Vishwajit Yanjya. O Lord of Guruvaayur! protect me.
