Meaning

Translation
Arjuna said: By my hearing the instructions You have kindly given me about these most confidential spiritual subjects, my illusion has now been dispelled.
ஶ்லோக:
ப⁴வாப்யயௌ ஹி பூ⁴தானாம் ஶ்ருதௌ விஸ்தரஶோ மயா ।
த்வத்த: கமலபத்ராக்ஷ மாஹாத்ம்யமபி சாவ்யயம் ॥ 2 ॥
Meaning
பவ⁴ — appearance; அப்யயௌ — disappearance; ஹி — certainly; பூ⁴தானாம் — of all living entities; ஶ்ருதௌ — have been heard; விஸ்தரஶ: — in detail; மயா — by me; த்வத்த: — from You; கமல-பத்ர-அக்ஷ — O lotus-eyed one; மாஹாத்ம்யம் — glories; அபி — also; ச — and; அவ்யயம் — inexhaustible.
Translation
O lotus-eyed one, I have heard from You in detail about the appearance and disappearance of every living entity and have realized Your inexhaustible glories.
ஶ்லோக:
ஏவமேதத்³யதா²த்த² த்வமாத்மானம் பரமேஶ்வர ।
த்³ரஷ்டுமிச்சா²மி தே ரூபமைஶ்வரம் புருஷோத்தம ॥ 3 ॥
Meaning
ஏவம் — thus; ஏதத் — this; யதா² — as it is; ஆத்த² — have spoken; த்வம் — You; ஆத்மானம் — Yourself; பரம-ஈஶ்வர — O Supreme Lord; த்³ரஷ்டும் — to see; இச்சாமி — I wish; தே — Your; ரூபம் — form; ஐஶ்வரம் — divine; புருஷ-உத்தம — O best of personalities.
Translation
O greatest of all personalities, O supreme form, though I see You here before me in Your actual position, as You have described Yourself, I wish to see how You have entered into this cosmic manifestation. I want to see that form of Yours.
ஶ்லோக:
மன்யஸே யதி³ தச்ச²க்யம் மயா த்³ரஷ்டுமிதி ப்ரபோ⁴ ।
யோகே³ஶ்வர ததோ மே த்வம் த³ர்ஶயாத்மானமவ்யயம் ॥ 4 ॥

மன்யஸே — You think; யதி³ — if; தத் — that; ஶக்யம் — is able; மயா — by me; த்³ரஷ்டும் — to be seen; இதி — thus; ப்ரபோ⁴ — O Lord; யோக-³ஈஶ்வர — O Lord of all mystic power; தத: — then; மே — unto me; த்வம் — You; த³ர்ஶய — show; ஆத்மானம் — Your Self; அவ்யயம் — eternal.
Translation
If You think that I am able to behold Your cosmic form, O my Lord, O master of all mystic power, then kindly show me that unlimited universal Self.
ஶ்லோக:
ஶ்ரீப⁴க³வானுவாச
பஶ்ய மே பார்த² ரூபாணி ஶதஶோத² ஸஹஸ்ரஶ: ।
நானாவிதா⁴னி தி³வ்யானி நானாவர்ணாக்ருதீனி ச ॥ 5 ॥

Translation
Bhagavan Sri Krishna said: My dear Arjuna, O son of Prithā, see now My opulences, hundreds of thousands of varied divine and multicolored forms.

பஶ்யாதி³த்யான்வஸூன்ருத்³ரானஶ்வினௌ மருதஸ்ததா² ।
ப³ஹூன்யத்³ருஷ்டபூர்வாணி பஶ்யாஶ்சர்யாணி பா⁴ரத ॥ 6 ॥
Meaning
பஶ்ய — see; ஆதி³த்யான் — the twelve sons of Aditi; வஸூன் — the eight Vasus; ருத்³ரான் — the eleven forms of Rudra; அஶ்வினௌ — the two Aśvinīs; மருத: — the forty-nine Maruts (demigods of the wind); ததா² — also; ப³ஹூனி — many; அத்³ருஷ்ட — that you have not seen; பூர்வாணி — before; பஶ்ய — see; ஆஶ்சர்யாணி — all the wonders; பா⁴ரத — O best of the Bhāratas.
Translation
O best of the Bhāratas, see here the different manifestations of Ādityas, Vasus, Rudras, Aśvinī-kumāras and all the other demigods. Behold the many wonderful things which no one has ever seen or heard of before.

இஹைகஸ்த²ம் ஜக³த்க்ருத்ஸ்னம் பஶ்யாத்³ய ஸசராசரம் ।
மம தே³ஹே கு³டா³கேஶ யச்சஆன்யத்³த்³ரஷ்டுமிச்ச²ஸி ॥ 7 ॥
Meaning
இஹ — in this; ஏக-ஸ்த²ம் — in one place; ஜக³த் — the universe; க்ருத்ஸ்னம் — completely; பஶ்ய — see; அத்³ய — immediately; ஸ — with; சர — the moving; அசரம் — and not moving; மம — My; தே³ஹே — in this body; கு³டா³கேஶ — O Arjuna; யத் — that which; ச — also; அன்யத் — other; த்³ரஷ்டும் — to see; இச்சஸி — you wish.
Translation
O Arjuna, whatever you wish to see, behold at once in this body of Mine! This universal form can show you whatever you now desire to see and whatever you may want to see in the future. Everything – moving and nonmoving – is here completely, in one place.
ஶ்லோக:
ந து மாம் ஶக்யஸே த்³ரஷ்டுமனேனைவ ஸ்வசக்ஷுஷா ।
தி³வ்யம் த³தா³மி தே சக்ஷு: பஶ்ய மே யோக³மைஶ்வரம் ॥ 8 ॥
Meaning
ந — never; து — but; மாம் — Me; ஶக்யஸே — are able; த்³ரஷ்டும் — to see; அனேன — with these; ஏவ — certainly; ஸ்வ-சக்ஷுஷா — your own eyes; தி³வ்யம் — divine; த³தா³மி — I give; தே — to you; சக்ஷு: — eyes; பஶ்ய — see; மே — My; யோக³ம் ஐஶ்வரம் — inconceivable mystic power.
Translation
But you cannot see Me with your present eyes. Therefore I give you divine eyes. Behold My mystic opulence!
ஶ்லோக:
ஸஞ்ஜய உவாச
ஏவமுக்த்வா ததோ ராஜன்மஹாயோகே³ஶ்வரோ ஹரி: ।
த³ர்ஶயாமாஸ பார்தா²ய பரமம் ரூபமைஶ்வரம் ॥ 9 ॥
Meaning
ஸஞ்ஜய: உவாச — Sañjaya said; ஏவம் — thus; உக்த்வா — saying; தத: — thereafter; ராஜன் — O King; மஹா-யோக-³ஈஶ்வர: — the most powerful mystic; ஹரி: — Bhagavan Sri Krishna, Kriṣṇa; த³ர்ஶயாம் ஆஸ — showed; பார்தா²ய — unto Arjuna; பரமம் — the divine; ரூபம் ஐஶ்வரம் — universal form.
Translation
Sañjaya said: O King, having spoken thus, the Supreme Lord of all mystic power, the Personality of Godhead, displayed His universal form to Arjuna.

அனேகவக்த்ரனயனமனேகாத்³ப⁴உதத³ர்ஶனம் ।
அனேகதி³வ்யாப⁴ரணம் தி³வ்யானேகோத்³யதாயுத⁴ம் ॥ 1௦ ॥
தி³வ்யமால்யாம்ப³ரத⁴ரம் தி³வ்யக³ந்தா⁴னுலேபனம் ।
ஸர்வாஶ்சர்யமயம் தே³வமனந்தம் விஶ்வதோமுக²ம் ॥ 11 ॥
Meaning
அனேக — various; வக்த்ர — mouths; நயனம் — eyes; அனேக — various; அத்³பு⁴த — wonderful; த³ர்ஶனம் — sights; அனேக — many; தி³வ்ய — divine; ஆப⁴ரணம் — ornaments; தி³வ்ய — divine; அனேக — various; உத்³யத — uplifted; ஆயுத⁴ம் — weapons; தி³வ்ய — divine; மால்ய — garlands; அம்பர³ — dresses; த⁴ரம் — wearing; தி³வ்ய — divine; க³ந்த⁴ — fragrances; அனுலேபனம் — smeared with; ஸர்வ — all; ஆஶ்சர்ய-மயம் — wonderful; தே³வம் — shining; அனந்தம் — unlimited; விஶ்வத:-முக²ம் — all-pervading.
Translation
Arjuna saw in that universal form unlimited mouths, unlimited eyes, unlimited wonderful visions. The form was decorated with many celestial ornaments and bore many divine upraised weapons. He wore celestial garlands and garments, and many divine scents were smeared over His body. All was wondrous, brilliant, unlimited, all-expanding.
ஶ்லோக:
தி³வி ஸூர்யஸஹஸ்ரஸ்ய ப⁴வேத்³யுக³பது³த்தி²தா ।
யதி³ பா⁴: ஸத்³ருஶீ ஸா ஸ்யாத்³ப⁴ஆஸஸ்தஸ்ய மஹாத்மன: ॥ 12 ॥
Meaning
தி³வி — in the sky; ஸூர்ய — of suns; ஸஹஸ்ரஸ்ய — of many thousands; ப⁴வேத் — there were; யுக³பத் — simultaneously; உத்தி²தா — present; யதி³ — if; பா⁴: — light; ஸத்³ருஶீ — like that; ஸா — that; ஸ்யாத் — might be; பா⁴ஸ: — effulgence; தஸ்ய — of Him; மஹா-ஆத்மன: — the great Lord.
Translation
If hundreds of thousands of suns were to rise at once into the sky, their radiance might resemble the effulgence of the Supreme Person in that universal form.
ஶ்லோக:
தத்ரைகஸ்த²ம் ஜக³த்க்ருத்ஸ்னம் ப்ரவிப⁴க்தமனேகதா⁴ ।
அபஶ்யத்³தே³வதே³வஸ்ய ஶரீரே பாண்ட³வஸ்ததா³ ॥ 13 ॥
Meaning
தத்ர — there; ஏக-ஸ்த²ம் — in one place; ஜக³த் — the universe; க்ருத்ஸ்னம் — complete; ப்ரவிப⁴க்தம் — divided; அனேகதா⁴ — into many; அபஶ்யத் — could see; தே³வ-தே³வஸ்ய — of Bhagavan Sri Krishna; ஶரீரே — in the universal form; பாண்ட³வ: — Arjuna; ததா³ — at that time.
Translation
At that time Arjuna could see in the universal form of the Lord the unlimited expansions of the universe situated in one place although divided into many, many thousands.
ஶ்லோக:
தத: ஸ விஸ்மயாவிஷ்டோ ஹ்ருஷ்டரோமா த⁴னஞ்ஜய: ।
ப்ரணம்ய ஶிரஸா தே³வம் க்ருதாஞ்ஜலிரபா⁴ஷத ॥ 14 ॥
Meaning
தத: — thereafter; ஸ: — he; விஸ்மய-ஆவிஷ்ட: — being overwhelmed with wonder; ஹ்ருஷ்ட-ரோமா — with his bodily hairs standing on end due to his great ecstasy; த⁴னம்-ஜய: — Arjuna; ப்ரணம்ய — offering obeisances; ஶிரஸா — with the head; தே³வம் — to Bhagavan Sri Krishna; க்ருத-அஞ்ஜலி: — with folded hands; அபா⁴ஷத — began to speak.
Translation
Then, bewildered and astonished, his hair standing on end, Arjuna bowed his head to offer obeisances and with folded hands began to pray to the Supreme Lord.
ஶ்லோக:
அர்ஜுன உவாச
பஶ்யாமி தே³வாம்ஸ்தவ தே³வ தே³ஹே
ஸர்வாம்ஸ்ததா² பூ⁴தவிஶேஷஸங்கா⁴ன் ।
ப்³ரஹ்மாணமீஶம் கமலாஸனஸ்த-²
ம்ருஷீம்ஶ்ச ஸர்வானுரகா³ம்ஶ்ச தி³வ்யான் ॥ 15 ॥
Meaning
அர்ஜுன: உவாச — Arjuna said; பஶ்யாமி — I see; தே³வான் — all the demigods; தவ — Your; தே³வ — O Lord; தே³ஹே — in the body; ஸர்வான் — all; ததா² — also; பூ⁴த — living entities; விஶேஷ-ஸங்கா⁴ன் — specifically assembled; ப்³ரஹ்மாணம் — Lord Brahmā; ஈஶம் — Lord Śiva; கமல-ஆஸன-ஸ்த²ம் — sitting on the lotus flower; ருஷீன் — great sages; ச — also; ஸர்வான் — all; உரகா³ன் — serpents; ச — also; தி³வ்யான் — divine.
Translation
Arjuna said: My dear Lord Kriṣṇa, I see assembled in Your body all the demigods and various other living entities. I see Brahmā sitting on the lotus flower, as well as Lord Śiva and all the sages and divine serpents.
ஶ்லோக:
அனேகபா³ஹூத³ரவக்த்ரனேத்ரம்
பஶ்யாமி த்வாம் ஸர்வதோனந்தரூபம் ।
நாந்தம் ந மத்⁴யம் ந புனஸ்தவாதி³ம்
பஶ்யாமி விஶ்வேஶ்வர விஶ்வரூப ॥ 16 ॥
Meaning
அனேக — many; பா³ஹு — arms; உதர³ — bellies; வக்த்ர — mouths; நேத்ரம் — eyes; பஶ்யாமி — I see; த்வாம் — You; ஸர்வத: — on all sides; அனந்த-ரூபம் — unlimited form; ந அந்தம் — no end; ந மத்⁴யம் — no middle; ந புன: — nor again; தவ — Your; ஆதி³ம் — beginning; பஶ்யாமி — I see; விஶ்வ-ஈஶ்வர — O Lord of the universe; விஶ்வ-ரூப — in the form of the universe.
Translation
O Lord of the universe, O universal form, I see in Your body many, many arms, bellies, mouths and eyes, expanded everywhere, without limit. I see in You no end, no middle and no beginning.
ஶ்லோக:
கிரீடினம் க³தி³னம் சக்ரிணம் ச
தேஜோராஶிம் ஸர்வதோ தீ³ப்திமந்தம் ।
பஶ்யாமி த்வாம் து³ர்னிரீக்ஷ்யம் ஸமந்தா-
த்³தீ³ப்தானலார்கத்³யுதிமப்ரமேயம் ॥ 17 ॥
Meaning
கிரீடினம் — with helmets; க³தி³னம் — with maces; சக்ரிணம் — with discs; ச — and; தேஜ:-ராஶிம் — effulgence; ஸர்வத: — on all sides; தீ³ப்தி-மந்தம் — glowing; பஶ்யாமி — I see; த்வாம் — You; து³ர்னிரீக்ஷ்யம் — difficult to see; ஸமந்தாத் — everywhere; தீ³ப்த-அனல — blazing fire; அர்க — of the sun; த்³யுதிம் — the sunshine; அப்ரமேயம் — immeasurable.
Translation
Your form is difficult to see because of its glaring effulgence, spreading on all sides, like blazing fire or the immeasurable radiance of the sun. Yet I see this glowing form everywhere, adorned with various crowns, clubs and discs.
ஶ்லோக:
த்வமக்ஷரம் பரமம் வேதி³தவ்யம்
த்வமஸ்ய விஶ்வஸ்ய பரம் நிதா⁴னம் ।
த்வமவ்யய: ஶாஶ்வதத⁴ர்மகோ³ப்தா
ஸனாதனஸ்த்வம் புருஷோ மதோ மே ॥ 18 ॥
Meaning
த்வம் — You; அக்ஷரம் — the infallible; பரமம் — supreme; வேதி³தவ்யம் — to be understood; த்வம் — You; அஸ்ய — of this; விஶ்வஸ்ய — universe; பரம் — supreme; நிதா⁴னம் — basis; த்வம் — You; அவ்யய: — inexhaustible; ஶாஶ்வத-த⁴ர்ம-கோ³ப்தா — maintainer of the eternal religion; ஸனாதன: — eternal; த்வம் — You; புருஷ: — the Supreme Personality; மத: மே — this is my opinion.
Translation
You are the supreme primal objective. You are the ultimate resting place of all this universe. You are inexhaustible, and You are the oldest. You are the maintainer of the eternal religion, the Personality of Godhead. This is my opinion.
ஶ்லோக:
அனாதி³மத்⁴யாந்தமனந்தவீர்ய-
மனந்தபா³ஹும் ஶஶிஸூர்யனேத்ரம் ।
பஶ்யாமி த்வாம் தீ³ப்தஹுதாஶவக்த்ரம்
ஸ்வதேஜஸா விஶ்வமித³ம் தபந்தம் ॥ 19 ॥
Meaning
அனாதி³ — without beginning; மத்⁴ய — middle; அந்தம் — or end; அனந்த — unlimited; வீர்யம் — glories; அனந்த — unlimited; பா³ஹும் — arms; ஶஶி — the moon; ஸூர்ய — and sun; நேத்ரம் — eyes; பஶ்யாமி — I see; த்வாம் — You; தீ³ப்த — blazing; ஹுதாஶ-வக்த்ரம் — fire coming out of Your mouth; ஸ்வ-தேஜஸா — by Your radiance; விஶ்வம் — universe; இத³ம் — this; தபந்தம் — heating.
Translation
You are without origin, middle or end. Your glory is unlimited. You have numberless arms, and the sun and moon are Your eyes. I see You with blazing fire coming forth from Your mouth, burning this entire universe by Your own radiance.

த்³யாவாப்ருதி²வ்யோரித³மந்தரம் ஹி
வ்யாப்தம் த்வயைகேன தி³ஶஶ்ச ஸர்வா: ।
த்³ருஷ்ட்வாத்³பு⁴தம் ரூபமுக்³ரம் தவேத³ம்
லோகத்ரயம் ப்ரவ்யதி²தம் மஹாத்மன் ॥ 2௦ ॥
Meaning
த்³யௌ — from outer space; ஆ-ப்ருதி²வ்யோ: — to the earth; இத³ம் — this; அந்தரம் — between; ஹி — certainly; வ்யாப்தம் — pervaded; த்வயா — by You; ஏகேன — alone; தி³ஶ: — directions; ச — and; ஸர்வா: — all; த்³ருஷ்ட்வா — by seeing; அத்³பு⁴தம் — wonderful; ரூபம் — form; உக்³ரம் — terrible; தவ — Your; இத³ம் — this; லோக — the planetary systems; த்ரயம் — three; ப்ரவ்யதி²தம் — perturbed; மஹா-ஆத்மன் — O great one.
Translation
Although You are one, You spread throughout the sky and the planets and all space between. O great one, seeing this wondrous and terrible form, all the planetary systems are perturbed.
ஶ்லோக:
அமீ ஹி த்வாம் ஸுரஸங்கா⁴ விஶந்தி
கேசித்³ப⁴ஈதா: ப்ராஞ்ஜலயோ க்³ருணந்தி ।
ஸ்வஸ்தீத்யுக்த்வா மஹர்ஷிஸித்³த⁴ஸங்கா⁴:
ஸ்துவந்தி த்வாம் ஸ்துதிபி⁴: புஷ்கலாபி⁴: ॥ 21 ॥
Meaning
அமீ — all those; ஹி — certainly; த்வாம் — You; ஸுர-ஸங்கா⁴: — groups of demigods; விஶந்தி — are entering; கேசித் — some of them; பீ⁴தா: — out of fear; ப்ராஞ்ஜலய: — with folded hands; க்³ருணந்தி — are offering prayers; ஸ்வஸ்தி — all peace; இதி — thus; உக்த்வா — speaking; மஹா-ருஷி — great sages; ஸித்³த-⁴ஸங்கா⁴: — perfect beings; ஸ்துவந்தி — are singing hymns; த்வாம் — unto You; ஸ்துதிபி⁴: — with prayers; புஷ்கலாபி⁴: — Vedic hymns.
Translation
All the hosts of demigods are surrendering before You and entering into You. Some of them, very much afraid, are offering prayers with folded hands. Hosts of great sages and perfected beings, crying “All peace!” are praying to You by singing the Vedic hymns.

ருத்³ராதி³த்யா வஸவோ யே ச ஸாத்⁴யா
விஶ்வேஶ்வினௌ மருதஶ்சோஷ்மபாஶ்ச ।

Translation
All the various manifestations of Lord Śiva, the Ādityas, the Vasus, the Sādhyas, the Viśvedevas, the two Aśvīs, the Maruts, the forefathers, the Gandharvas, the Yakṣas, the Asuras and the perfected demigods are beholding You in wonder.
ஶ்லோக:
ரூபம் மஹத்தே ப³ஹுவக்த்ரனேத்ரம்
மஹாபா³ஹோ ப³ஹுபா³ஹூருபாத³ம் ।

Translation
O mighty-armed one, all the planets with their demigods are disturbed at seeing Your great form, with its many faces, eyes, arms, thighs, legs and bellies and Your many terrible teeth; and as they are disturbed, so am I.

நப:⁴ஸ்ப்ருஶம் தீ³ப்தமனேகவர்ணம்
வ்யாத்தானநம் தீ³ப்தவிஶாலனேத்ரம் ।

Translation
O all-pervading Viṣṇu, seeing You with Your many radiant colors touching the sky, Your gaping mouths, and Your great glowing eyes, my mind is perturbed by fear. I can no longer maintain my steadiness or equilibrium of mind.

த்³ருஷ்ட்வைவ காலானலஸன்னிபா⁴னி ।

Translation
O Lord of lords, O refuge of the worlds, please be gracious to me. I cannot keep my balance seeing thus Your blazing deathlike faces and awful teeth. In all directions I am bewildered.

Translation
All the sons of Dhritarāṣṭra, along with their allied kings, and Bhīṣma, Droṇa, Karṇa – and our chief soldiers also – are rushing into Your fearful mouths. And some I see trapped with heads smashed between Your teeth.

யதா² நதீ³னாம் ப³ஹவோம்பு³வேகா³:
ஸமுத்³ரமேவாபி⁴முகா² த்³ரவந்தி ।
ததா² தவாமீ நரலோகவீரா

Translation
As the many waves of the rivers flow into the ocean, so do all these great warriors enter blazing into Your mouths.

விஶந்தி நாஶாய ஸம்ருத்³த⁴வேகா³: ।
ததை²வ நாஶாய விஶந்தி லோகா-

I see all people rushing full speed into Your mouths, as moths dash to destruction in a blazing fire.

Translation
O Viṣṇu, I see You devouring all people from all sides with Your flaming mouths. Covering all the universe with Your effulgence, You are manifest with terrible, scorching rays.

Translation
O Lord of lords, so fierce of form, please tell me who You are. I offer my obeisances unto You; please be gracious to me. You are the primal Lord. I want to know about You, for I do not know what Your mission is.

Translation
Bhagavan Sri Krishna said: Time I am, the great destroyer of the worlds, and I have come here to destroy all people. With the exception of you [the Pāṇḍavas], all the soldiers here on both sides will be slain.

Translation
Therefore get up. Prepare to fight and win glory. Conquer your enemies and enjoy a flourishing kingdom. They are already put to death by My arrangement, and you, O Savyasācī, can be but an instrument in the fight.

த்³ரோணம் ச பீ⁴ஷ்மம் ச ஜயத்³ரத²ம் ச
கர்ணம் ததா²ன்யானபி யோத⁴வீரான் ।

த்³ரோணம் ச — also Droṇa; பீ⁴ஷ்மம் ச — also Bhīṣma; ஜயத்³ரத²ம் ச — also Jayadratha; கர்ணம் — Karṇa; ததா² — also; அன்யான் — others; அபி — certainly; யோத-⁴வீரான் — great warriors; மயா — by Me; ஹதான் — already killed; த்வம் — you; ஜஹி — destroy; மா — do not; வ்யதி²ஷ்டா²: — be disturbed; யுத்⁴யஸ்வ — just fight; ஜேதா அஸி — you will conquer; ரணே — in the fight; ஸபத்னான் — enemies.
Translation
Droṇa, Bhīṣma, Jayadratha, Karṇa and the other great warriors have already been destroyed by Me. Therefore, kill them and do not be disturbed. Simply fight, and you will vanquish your enemies in battle.

Translation
Sañjaya said to Dhritarāṣṭra: O King, after hearing these words from Bhagavan Sri Krishna, the trembling Arjuna offered obeisances with folded hands again and again. He fearfully spoke to Lord Kriṣṇa in a faltering voice, as follows.

Translation
Arjuna said: O master of the senses, the world becomes joyful upon hearing Your name, and thus everyone becomes attached to You. Although the perfected beings offer You their respectful homage, the demons are afraid, and they flee here and there. All this is rightly done.

கஸ்மாச்ச தே ந நமேரன்மஹாத்மன்

Translation
O great one, greater even than Brahmā, You are the original creator. Why then should they not offer their respectful obeisances unto You? O limitless one, God of gods, refuge of the universe! You are the invincible source, the cause of all causes, transcendental to this material manifestation.

You are the original Personality of Godhead, the oldest, the ultimate sanctuary of this manifested cosmic world. You are the knower of everything, and You are all that is knowable. You are the supreme refuge, above the material modes. O limitless form! This whole cosmic manifestation is pervaded by You!

You are air, and You are the supreme controller! You are fire, You are water, and You are the moon! You are Brahmā, the first living creature, and You are the great-grandfather. I therefore offer my respectful obeisances unto You a thousand times, and again and yet again!

Translation
Thinking of You as my friend, I have rashly addressed You “O Kriṣṇa,” “O Yādava,” “O my friend,” not knowing Your glories. Please forgive whatever I may have done in madness or in love. I have dishonored You many times, jesting as we relaxed, lay on the same bed, or sat or ate together, sometimes alone and sometimes in front of many friends. O infallible one, please excuse me for all those offenses.

பிதாஸி லோகஸ்ய சராசரஸ்ய
த்வமஸ்ய பூஜ்யஶ்ச கு³ருர்க³ரீயான் ।

Translation
You are the father of this complete cosmic manifestation, of the moving and the nonmoving. You are its worshipable chief, the supreme spiritual master. No one is greater than You, nor can anyone be one with You. How then could there be anyone greater than You within the three worlds, O Lord of immeasurable power?

தஸ்மாத்ப்ரணம்ய ப்ரணிதா⁴ய காயம்

Translation
You are the Supreme Lord, to be worshiped by every living being. Thus I fall down to offer You my respectful obeisances and ask Your mercy. As a father tolerates the impudence of his son, a friend the impertinence of a friend, or a husband the familiarity of his wife, please tolerate the wrongs I may have done You.

அத்³ருஷ்டபூர்வம் ஹ்ருஷிதோஸ்மி த்³ருஷ்ட்வா
ப⁴யேன ச ப்ரவ்யதி²தம் மனோ மே ।
ததே³வ மே த³ர்ஶய தே³வ ரூபம்
ப்ரஸீத³ தே³வேஶ ஜக³ன்னிவாஸ ॥ 45 ॥
Meaning
அத்³ருஷ்ட-பூர்வம் — never seen before; ஹ்ருஷித: — gladdened; அஸ்மி — I am; த்³ருஷ்ட்வா — by seeing; ப⁴யேன — out of fear; ச — also; ப்ரவ்யதி²தம் — perturbed; மன: — mind; மே — my; தத் — that; ஏவ — certainly; மே — unto me; த³ர்ஶய — show; தே³வ — O Lord; ரூபம் — the form; ப்ரஸீத³ — just be gracious; தே³வ-ஈஶ — O Lord of lords; ஜக³த்-னிவாஸ — O refuge of the universe.
Translation
After seeing this universal form, which I have never seen before, I am gladdened, but at the same time my mind is disturbed with fear. Therefore please bestow Your grace upon me and reveal again Your form as the Personality of Godhead, O Lord of lords, O abode of the universe.
ஶ்லோக:
கிரீடினம் க³தி³னம் சக்ரஹஸ்த-
மிச்சா²மி த்வாம் த்³ரஷ்டுமஹம் ததை²வ ।
தேனைவ ரூபேண சதுர்பு⁴ஜேன
ஸஹஸ்ரபா³ஹோ ப⁴வ விஶ்வமூர்தே ॥ 46 ॥
Meaning
கிரீடினம் — with helmet; க³தி³னம் — with club; சக்ர-ஹஸ்தம் — disc in hand; இச்சாமி — I wish; த்வாம் — You; த்³ரஷ்டும் — to see; அஹம் — I; ததா² ஏவ — in that position; தேன ஏவ — in that; ரூபேண — form; சது:-பு⁴ஜேன — four-handed; ஸஹஸ்ர-பா³ஹோ — O thousand-handed one; பவ⁴ — just become; விஶ்வ-மூர்தே — O universal form.
Translation
O universal form, O thousand-armed Lord, I wish to see You in Your four-armed form, with helmeted head and with club, wheel, conch and lotus flower in Your hands. I long to see You in that form.

ஶ்ரீப⁴க³வானுவாச
மயா ப்ரஸன்னேன தவார்ஜுனேத³ம்
ரூபம் பரம் த³ர்ஶிதமாத்மயோகா³த் ।
தேஜோமயம் விஶ்வமனந்தமாத்³யம்
யன்மே த்வத³ன்யேன ந த்³ருஷ்டபூர்வம் ॥ 47 ॥
Meaning
ஶ்ரீ-ப⁴க³வான் உவாச — Bhagavan Sri Krishna said; மயா — by Me; ப்ரஸன்னேன — happily; தவ — unto you; அர்ஜுன — O Arjuna; இத³ம் — this; ரூபம் — form; பரம் — transcendental; த³ர்ஶிதம் — shown; ஆத்ம-யோகா³த் — by My internal potency; தேஜ:-மயம் — full of effulgence; விஶ்வம் — the entire universe; அனந்தம் — unlimited; ஆத்³யம் — original; யத் — that which; மே — My; த்வத் அன்யேன — besides you; ந த்³ருஷ்ட-பூர்வம் — no one has previously seen.
Translation
Bhagavan Sri Krishna said: My dear Arjuna, happily have I shown you, by My internal potency, this supreme universal form within the material world. No one before you has ever seen this primal form, unlimited and full of glaring effulgence.
ஶ்லோக:
ந வேத³யஜ்ஞாத்⁴யயனைர்ன தா³னை-
ர்ன ச க்ரியாபி⁴ர்ன தபோபி⁴ருக்³ரை: ।
ஏவம்ரூப: ஶக்ய அஹம் ந்ருலோகே
த்³ரஷ்டும் த்வத³ன்யேன குருப்ரவீர ॥ 48 ॥
Meaning
ந — never; வேத-³யஜ்ஞ — by sacrifice; அத்⁴யயனை: — or Vedic study; ந — never; தா³னை: — by charity; ந — never; ச — also; க்ரியாபி⁴: — by pious activities; ந — never; தபோபி⁴: — by serious penances; உக்³ரை: — severe; ஏவம்-ரூப: — in this form; ஶக்ய: — can; அஹம் — I; ந்ரு-லோகே — in this material world; த்³ரஷ்டும் — be seen; த்வத் — than you; அன்யேன — by another; குரு-ப்ரவீர — O best among the Kuru warriors.
Translation
O best of the Kuru warriors, no one before you has ever seen this universal form of Mine, for neither by studying the Vedas, nor by performing sacrifices, nor by charity, nor by pious activities, nor by severe penances can I be seen in this form in the material world.
ஶ்லோக:
மா தே வ்யதா² மா ச விமூட⁴பா⁴வோ
த்³ருஷ்ட்வா ரூபம் கோ⁴ரமீத்³ருங்மமேத³ம் ।
வ்யபேதபீ⁴: ப்ரீதமனா: புனஸ்த்வம்
ததே³வ மே ரூபமித³ம் ப்ரபஶ்ய ॥ 49 ॥

மா — let it not be; தே — unto you; வ்யதா² — trouble; மா — let it not be; ச — also; விமூட-⁴பா⁴வ: — bewilderment; த்³ருஷ்ட்வா — by seeing; ரூபம் — form; கோ⁴ரம் — horrible; ஈத்³ருக் — as it is; மம — My; இத³ம் — this; வ்யபேத-பீ⁴: — free from all fear; ப்ரீத-மனா: — pleased in mind; புன: — again; த்வம் — you; தத் — that; ஏவ — thus; மே — My; ரூபம் — form; இத³ம் — this; ப்ரபஶ்ய — just see.
Translation
You have been perturbed and bewildered by seeing this horrible feature of Mine. Now let it be finished. My devotee, be free again from all disturbances. With a peaceful mind you can now see the form you desire.

இத்யர்ஜுனம் வாஸுதே³வஸ்ததோ²க்த்வா
ஸ்வகம் ரூபம் த³ர்ஶயாமாஸ பூ⁴ய: ।
ஆஶ்வாஸயாமாஸ ச பீ⁴தமேனம்
பூ⁴த்வா புன: ஸௌம்யவபுர்மஹாத்மா ॥ 5௦ ॥
Meaning
ஸஞ்ஜய: உவாச — Sañjaya said; இதி — thus; அர்ஜுனம் — unto Arjuna; வாஸுதே³வ: — Kriṣṇa; ததா² — in that way; உக்த்வா — speaking; ஸ்வகம் — His own; ரூபம் — form; த³ர்ஶயாம் ஆஸ — showed; பூ⁴ய: — again; ஆஶ்வாஸயாம் ஆஸ — encouraged; ச — also; பீ⁴தம் — fearful; ஏனம் — him; பூ⁴த்வா — becoming; புன: — again; ஸௌம்ய-வபு: — the beautiful form; மஹா-ஆத்மா — the great one.
Translation
Sañjaya said to Dhritarāṣṭra: Bhavan, Sri Kriṣṇa, having spoken thus to Arjuna, displayed His real four-armed form and at last showed His two-armed form, thus encouraging the fearful Arjuna.

அர்ஜுன உவாச
த்³ருஷ்ட்வேத³ம் மானுஷம் ரூபம் தவ ஸௌம்யம் ஜனார்த³ன ।
இதா³னீமஸ்மி ஸம்வ்ருத்த: ஸசேதா: ப்ரக்ருதிம் க³த: ॥ 51 ॥
Meaning
அர்ஜுன: உவாச — Arjuna said; த்³ருஷ்ட்வா — seeing; இத³ம் — this; மானுஷம் — human; ரூபம் — form; தவ — Your; ஸௌம்யம் — very beautiful; ஜனார்தன³ — O chastiser of the enemies; இதா³னீம் — now; அஸ்மி — I am; ஸம்வ்ருத்த: — settled; ஸ-சேதா: — in my consciousness; ப்ரக்ருதிம் — to my own nature; க³த: — returned.
Translation
When Arjuna thus saw Kriṣṇa in His original form, he said: O Janārdana, seeing this humanlike form, so very beautiful, I am now composed in mind, and I am restored to my original nature.
ஶ்லோக:
ஶ்ரீப⁴க³வானுவாச
ஸுது³ர்த³ர்ஶமித³ம் ரூபம் த்³ருஷ்டவானஸி யன்மம ।
தே³வா அப்யஸ்ய ரூபஸ்ய நித்யம் த³ர்ஶனகாங்க்ஷிண: ॥ 52 ॥
Meaning
ஶ்ரீ-ப⁴க³வான் உவாச — Bhagavan Sri Krishna said; ஸு-து³ர்த³ர்ஶம் — very difficult to see; இத³ம் — this; ரூபம் — form; த்³ருஷ்டவான் அஸி — as you have seen; யத் — which; மம — of Mine; தே³வா: — the demigods; அபி — also; அஸ்ய — this; ரூபஸ்ய — form; நித்யம் — eternally; த³ர்ஶன-காங்க்ஷிண: — aspiring to see.
Translation
Bhagavan Sri Krishna said: My dear Arjuna, this form of Mine you are now seeing is very difficult to behold. Even the demigods are ever seeking the opportunity to see this form, which is so dear.
ஶ்லோக:
நாஹம் வேதை³ர்ன தபஸா ந தா³னேன ந சேஜ்யயா ।
ஶக்ய ஏவம்விதோ⁴ த்³ரஷ்டும் த்³ருஷ்டவானஸி மாம் யதா² ॥ 53 ॥
Meaning
ந — never; அஹம் — I; வேதை³: — by study of the Vedas; ந — never; தபஸா — by serious penances; ந — never; தா³னேன — by charity; ந — never; ச — also; இஜ்யயா — by worship; ஶக்ய: — it is possible; ஏவம்-வித:⁴ — like this; த்³ரஷ்டும் — to see; த்³ருஷ்டவான் — seeing; அஸி — you are; மாம் — Me; யதா² — as.
Translation
The form you are seeing with your transcendental eyes cannot be understood simply by studying the Vedas, nor by undergoing serious penances, nor by charity, nor by worship. It is not by these means that one can see Me as I am.
ஶ்லோக:
ப⁴க்த்யஆ த்வனந்யயா ஶக்ய அஹமேவம்விதோ⁴ர்ஜுன ।
ஜ்ஞாதும் த்³ரஷ்டும் ச தத்த்வேன ப்ரவேஷ்டும் ச பரந்தப ॥ 54 ॥
Meaning
ப⁴க்த்யா — by devotional service; து — but; அனந்யயா — without being mixed with fruitive activities or speculative knowledge; ஶக்ய: — possible; அஹம் — I; ஏவம்-வித:⁴ — like this; அர்ஜுன — O Arjuna; ஜ்ஞாதும் — to know; த்³ரஷ்டும் — to see; ச — and; தத்த்வேன — in fact; ப்ரவேஷ்டும் — to enter into; ச — also; பரம்-தப — O subduer of the enemy.
Translation
My dear Arjuna, only by undivided devotional service can I be understood as I am, standing before you, and can thus be seen directly. Only in this way can you enter into the mysteries of My understanding.
ஶ்லோக:
மத்கர்மக்ருன்மத்பரமோ மத்³ப⁴க்த: ஸங்க³வர்ஜித: ।
நிர்வைர: ஸர்வபூ⁴தேஷு ய: ஸ மாமேதி பாண்ட³வ ॥ 55 ॥
Meaning
மத்-கர்ம-க்ருத் — engaged in doing My work; மத்-பரம: — considering Me the Supreme; மத்-ப⁴க்த: — engaged in My devotional service; ஸங்க-³வர்ஜித: — freed from the contamination of fruitive activities and mental speculation; நிர்வைர: — without an enemy; ஸர்வ-பூ⁴தேஷு — among all living entities; ய: — one who; ஸ: — he; மாம் — unto Me; ஏதி — comes; பாண்டவ³ — O son of Pāṇḍu.
Translation
My dear Arjuna, he who engages in My pure devotional service, free from the contaminations of fruitive activities and mental speculation, he who works for Me, who makes Me the supreme goal of his life, and who is friendly to every living being – he certainly comes to Me.
