க³ரலம் தரலானலம் புரஸ்தா-
ஜ்ஜலதே⁴ருத்³விஜகா³ல காலகூடம் ।
அமரஸ்துதிவாத³மோத³னிக்⁴னோ
கி³ரிஶஸ்தன்னிபபௌ ப⁴வத்ப்ரியார்த²ம் ॥1॥
Meaning
க³ரலம் - poison; தரல-அனலம் - as molten fire; புரஸ்தாத்- - first and foremost; ஜலதே⁴:- - from the ocean; உத்³விஜகா³ல - emerged; காலகூடம் - (which was ) the Kaalkoota poison; அமர-ஸ்துதிவாத்³-மோத³னிக்⁴ன: - pleased by the praises sung by the Devas; கி³ரிஶ:- - Shiva; தத்-னிபபௌ - drank that; ப⁴வத்-ப்ரியார்த²ம் - to please Thee;
Translation
First and foremost there emerged from the ocean the Kaalakoota poison which was like molten fire. The gods propitiated Shiva by singing hymns of praise to him. He then drank the poison to please Thee.
ஶ்லோக:
விமத²த்ஸு ஸுராஸுரேஷு ஜாதா
ஸுரபி⁴ஸ்தாம்ருஷிஷு ந்யதா⁴ஸ்த்ரிதா⁴மன் ।
ஹயரத்னமபூ⁴த³தே²ப⁴ரத்னம்
த்³யுதருஶ்சாப்ஸரஸ: ஸுரேஷு தானி ॥2॥
Meaning
விமத²த்ஸு ஸுர-அஸுரேஷு - as were churning, the Devas and Asuras; ஜாதா ஸுரபி⁴:- - was born (came out) Kaamadhenu (the divine cow); தாம்-ருஷிஷு ந்யதா⁴:- - to the rishis (Thou) gave her; த்ரிதா⁴மன் - O Lord of the three worlds!; ஹய-ரத்னம்-அபூ⁴த்- - the jewel of a horse (Uchchaishrava) emerged; அத-²இப-⁴ரத்னம் - then the great elephant (Airaavata); த்³யு-தரு:- - the celestial tree (Kalpaka); ச-அப்ஸரஸ: - and Apsaras (celestial nymphs); ஸுரேஷு தானி - to the Devas (Thou gave) them;
Translation
As the Devas and Asuras were churning, the divine cow Kaamadhenu came out.Thou gave it to the sages. O Lord of the three worlds! Then emerged the jewel of a horse (Uchchaishrava), then the great elephant (Airaavata), then the celestial tree (Kalpaka) and the Apsaras (divine damsels) appeared. Thou gave them to the gods.
ஶ்லோக:
ஜக³தீ³ஶ ப⁴வத்பரா ததா³னீம்
கமனீயா கமலா ப³பூ⁴வ தே³வீ ।
அமலாமவலோக்ய யாம் விலோல:
ஸகலோபி ஸ்ப்ருஹயாம்ப³பூ⁴வ லோக: ॥3॥
Meaning
ஜக³தீ³ஶ - O Lord of the Worlds!; ப⁴வத்பரா - devoted to Thee; ததா³னீம் - then; கமனீயா - enchanting; கமலா ப³பூ⁴வ தே³வீ - Lakshmi Devi emerged; அமலாம்-அவலோக்ய யாம் - by seeing her pure form; விலோல: ஸகல:-அபி - fascinated everyone was; ஸ்ப்ருஹயாம்-ப³பூ⁴வ லோக: - and agitated with desire became the whole world;
Translation
O Lord of the worlds! Devoted to Thee, then the enchanting Lakshmi Devi emerged. Seeing her pure and perfect form everyone was fascinated and the world got agitated with desire.
ஶ்லோக:
த்வயி த³த்தஹ்ருதே³ ததை³வ தே³வ்யை
த்ரித³ஶேந்த்³ரோ மணிபீடி²காம் வ்யதாரீத் ।
ஸகலோபஹ்ருதாபி⁴ஷேசனீயை:
ருஷயஸ்தாம் ஶ்ருதிகீ³ர்பி⁴ரப்⁴யஷிஞ்சன் ॥4॥
Meaning
த்வயி த³த்தஹ்ருத³யே - having set her heart on Thee; ததா³-ஏவ தே³வ்யை - then alone, by the goddess; த்ரித³ஶேந்த்³ர: - Indra; மணிபீடி²காம் - a bejewelled throne; வ்யதாரீத் - gave; ஸகல-உபஹ்ருத-அபி⁴ஷேசனீயை: - with the objects of consecration which were brought by all; ருஷய:- - the Rishis; தாம் ஶ்ருதி-கீ³ர்பி⁴:-அப்⁴யஷிஞ்சன் - consecrated her, also with Vedic hymns;
Translation
The goddess who had set her heart on Thee was given a bejewelled throne by Indra. With the objects which everyone had brought, the sages consecrated her, while they sang Vedic hymns.
ஶ்லோக:
அபி⁴ஷேகஜலானுபாதிமுக்³த-⁴
த்வத³பாங்கை³ரவபூ⁴ஷிதாங்க³வல்லீம் ।
மணிகுண்ட³லபீதசேலஹார-
ப்ரமுகை²ஸ்தாமமராத³யோன்வபூ⁴ஷன் ॥5॥
Meaning
அபி⁴ஷேக-ஜல-அனுபாதி- - with the holy waters pouring; முக்³த-⁴த்வத்-அபாங்கை³:- - followed by Thy enamoured side glances; அவபூ⁴ஷிதா-அங்க-³வல்லீம் - her creeper like body was adorned; மணி-குண்ட³ல-பீத-சேல-ஹார-ப்ரமுகை²:- - (and with) gem studded earrings, yellow silk robe and necklaces; தாம்-அமர-ஆத³ய:-அன்வபூ⁴ஷன் - the gods adorned her further;
Translation
As the holy waters were pouring on her, her creeper like body was adorned by Thy enamoured side glances. The gods further bedecked her with gem studded earrings, yellow silk robe and necklaces etc.
ஶ்லோக:
வரணஸ்ரஜமாத்தப்⁴ருங்க³னாதா³ம்
த³த⁴தீ ஸா குசகும்ப⁴மந்த³யானா ।
பத³ஶிஞ்ஜிதமஞ்ஜுனூபுரா த்வாம்
கலிதவ்ரீலவிலாஸமாஸஸாத³ ॥6॥
Meaning
வரண-ஸ்ரஜம்- - the wedding garland; ஆத்த-ப்⁴ருங்க-³னாதா³ம் - having humming bees on it; த³த⁴தீ ஸா - holding she (Lakshmi Devi); குச-கும்ப-⁴மந்த-³யானா - with a gait slowed by the weight of the pot like breasts; பத-³ஶிஞ்ஜித-மஞ்ஜு-னூபுரா - with beautiful anklets making a pleasant sound; த்வாம் - (towards) Thee; கலித-வ்ரீல-விலாஸம்- - displaying a little coyness; ஆஸஸாத³ - approached;
Translation
Lakshmi Devi holding a wedding garland having humming bees on it, approached Thee with a gait slowed down by the weight of her heavy breasts. As she walked, the beautiful anklets adorning her shapely feet spread a delightful sound and a touch of coyness on her face enhanced her beauty.
ஶ்லோக:
கி³ரிஶத்³ருஹிணாதி³ஸர்வதே³வான்
கு³ணபா⁴ஜோப்யவிமுக்ததோ³ஷலேஶான் ।
அவம்ருஶ்ய ஸதை³வ ஸர்வரம்யே
நிஹிதா த்வய்யனயாபி தி³வ்யமாலா ॥7॥
Meaning
கி³ரிஶ-த்³ருஹிண-ஆதி³-ஸர்வ-தே³வான் - Shiva Brahmaa and other gods; கு³ண-பா⁴ஜ:-அபி- - though endowed with virtues; அவிமுக்த-தோ³ஷ-லேஶான் - were not free from slight discrepancies; அவம்ருஶ்ய ஸதா³-ஏவ - finding that always; ஸர்வ-ரம்யே - (Thou) perfect in everyway; நிஹிதா த்வயி- - put on Thee; அனயா-அபி - by her also; தி³வ்ய-மாலா - the divine garland;
Translation
She realised that all other gods as Shiva Brahmaa and others though endowed with virtues, were not free from all defects. Thou who are perfect in every way, she put the divine garland on Thee.
ஶ்லோக:
உரஸா தரஸா மமானிதை²னாம்
பு⁴வனானாம் ஜனநீமனந்யபா⁴வாம் ।
த்வது³ரோவிலஸத்ததீ³க்ஷணஶ்ரீ-
பரிவ்ருஷ்ட்யா பரிபுஷ்டமாஸ விஶ்வம் ॥8॥
Meaning
உரஸா தரஸா - by Thy bosom, quickly; மமானித-²ஐனாம் - (taking her) and honoring her; பு⁴வனானாம் ஜனநீம் - the mother of the worlds; அனந்ய பா⁴வாம் - who is devoted to no other than Thee; த்வத்-உரோ-விலஸத்- - on Thy bosom sporting; த்வத்-ஈக்ஷண-ஶ்ரீ-பரிவ்ருஷ்ட்யா - by the showering of her auspicious glances; பரிபுஷ்டம்-ஆஸ விஶ்வம் - prosperity was every where;
Translation
Lakshmi Devi, the mother of the universe, was immediately taken by Thee on Thy bosom giving her due respect and honor as she was solely devoted to Thee. Shining on Thy bosom she showered compassionate glances all around which brought prosperity to the whole world.
ஶ்லோக:
அதிமோஹனவிப்⁴ரமா ததா³னீம்
மத³யந்தீ க²லு வாருணீ நிராகா³த் ।
தமஸ: பத³வீமதா³ஸ்த்வமேனா-
மதிஸம்மானநயா மஹாஸுரேப்⁴ய: ॥9॥
Meaning
அதி-மோஹன-விப்⁴ரமா - highly exciting and deluding; ததா³னீம் - then; மத³யந்தீ க²லு - intoxicating indeed; வாருணீ நிராகா³த் - liquor emerged; தமஸ: பத³வீம்- - the source of all sins and vice; அதா³:- த்வம்-ஏனாம்- - Thou gave her; அதி-ஸம்மானநயா - with great honor; மஹா-அஸுரேப்⁴ய: - to the great Asuras;
Translation
Then the highly exciting, deluding and intoxicating liquor gushed forth. This, the source of sins and vices, Thou ceremoniously gave to the great Asuras.
ஶ்லோக:
தருணாம்பு³த³ஸுந்த³ரஸ்ததா³ த்வம்
நனு த⁴ன்வந்தரிருத்தி²தோம்பு³ராஶே: ।
அம்ருதம் கலஶே வஹன் கராப்⁴யா-
மகி²லார்திம் ஹர மாருதாலயேஶ ॥1௦॥
Meaning
தருண-அம்பு³த-³ஸுந்த³ர:- - beautiful like fresh rain clouds; ததா³ த்வம் நனு - Then Thou indeed; த⁴ன்வந்தரி:-உத்தி²த:- - in the form of Dhanwantari emerged; அம்பு³ராஶே: - from the ocean; அம்ருதம் கலஶே வஹன் - nectar carrying in a pot; கராப்⁴யாம்- - with (Thy) two hands; அகி²ல-ஆர்திம் ஹர - be pleased to remove all my ailments; மாருதாலயேஶ - O Lord of Guruvaayur!;
Translation
From the ocean, then, Thou emerged beautiful like a fresh rain cloud in the form of Dhanwantari holding in Thy two hands the pot of nectar. O Lord of Guruvaayur! Deign to remove all my ailments.
