ஸத்ராஜிதஸ்த்வமத² லுப்³த⁴வத³ர்கலப்³த⁴ம்
தி³வ்யம் ஸ்யமந்தகமணிம் ப⁴க³வன்னயாசீ: ।
தத்காரணம் ப³ஹுவித⁴ம் மம பா⁴தி நூனம்
தஸ்யாத்மஜாம் த்வயி ரதாம் ச²லதோ விவோடு⁴ம் ॥1॥
Meaning
ஸத்ராஜித:- - from Satraajit; த்வம்-அத² - Thou then; லுப்³த-⁴வத்- - greedy man like; அர்க-லப்³த⁴ம் - from the sun attained; தி³வ்யம் ஸ்யமந்தக-மணிம் - divine Syamantaka jewel; ப⁴க³வன்-அயாசீ: - O Lord Thou asked for; தத்-காரணம் - the reason; ப³ஹு-வித⁴ம் - many fold; மம பா⁴தி நூனம் - to me appeals indeed; தஸ்ய-ஆத்மஜாம் - his daughter; த்வயி ரதாம் - in Thee infatuated; ச²லத: விவோடு⁴ம் - by strategy to marry;
Translation
Thou then like a greedy man asked for the divine Syamantaka jewel from Satraajit who had got it from the Sun god. O Lord! The reasons for this may be many. What appeals to me indeed is that this was a strategy by which Thou wanted to marry his daughter (Satyabhaamaa) who was in love with Thee.
ஶ்லோக:
அத³த்தம் தம் துப்⁴யம் மணிவரமனேனால்பமனஸா
ப்ரஸேனஸ்தத்³ப்⁴ராதா க³லபு⁴வி வஹன் ப்ராப ம்ருக³யாம் ।
அஹன்னேனம் ஸிம்ஹோ மணிமஹஸி மாம்ஸப்⁴ரமவஶாத்
கபீந்த்³ரஸ்தம் ஹத்வா மணிமபி ச பா³லாய த³தி³வான் ॥2॥
Meaning
அத³த்தம் தம் - not giving that; துப்⁴யம் மணிவரம்- - to Thee the precious jewel; அனேன-அல்ப-மனஸா - by him the narrow minded; ப்ரஸேன:-தத்-ப்⁴ராதா - Prasena, his brother; க³ல-பு⁴வி வஹன் - in the neck wearing; ப்ராப ம்ருக³யாம் - went hunting; அஹன்-ஏனம் ஸிம்ஹ: - killed him the lion; மணி-மஹஸி - in the jewel brilliance; மாம்ஸ-ப்⁴ரம-வஶாத் - for flesh mistaking,; கபீந்த்³ர:-தம் ஹத்வா - the great monkey him (the lion) killing; மணிம்-அபி ச - the jewel also and; பா³லாய த³தி³வான் - to (his) child gave;
Translation
The narrow minded one (Satraajit) did not give the precious jewel to Thee. His brother Prasena wore it round his neck and went away hunting. A lion mistook the jewel because of its brilliance to be a lump of flesh and so he killed Prasena. The great monkey (Jaambavaana) killed the lion and gave the jewel to his child.
ஶ்லோக:
ஶஶம்ஸு: ஸத்ராஜித்³கி³ரமனு ஜனாஸ்த்வாம் மணிஹரம்
ஜனானாம் பீயூஷம் ப⁴வதி கு³ணினாம் தோ³ஷகணிகா ।
தத: ஸர்வஜ்ஞோபி ஸ்வஜனஸஹிதோ மார்க³ணபர:
ப்ரஸேனம் தம் த்³ருஷ்ட்வா ஹரிமபி க³தோபூ⁴: கபிகு³ஹாம் ॥3॥
Meaning
ஶஶம்ஸு: - talked about; ஸத்ராஜித்-கி³ரம்-அனு - Satraajit's words following; ஜனா:-த்வாம் மணி-ஹரம் - the people, Thou jewel thief; ஜனானாம் பீயூஷம் - for the people nectar like; ப⁴வதி கு³ணினாம் - it is of the virtuous; தோ³ஷ-கணிகா - fault slightest; தத: ஸர்வஜ்ஞ:-அபி - therefore knowing everything also; ஸ்வ-ஜன-ஸஹித: - Thy people along with; மார்க³ண-பர: - to search intent; ப்ரஸேனம் தம் - that Prasen; த்³ருஷ்ட்வா ஹரிம்-அபி - seeing the lion also; க³த:-அபூ⁴: - went; கபி-கு³ஹாம் - (into) the monkey's cave;
Translation
Influenced by the allegations of Satraajit, people suspected that Thou had stolen the jewel. Even a slight fault in the conduct of the virtuous person is like nectar for people in general, for it gives them a chance to slight that person. In spite of the fact that Thou knew everything about the jewel, Thou went in search for it with Thy men. Thou saw Prasena and the lion lying dead and thus were led to the monkey (Jaambavaan's) cave.
ஶ்லோக:
ப⁴வந்தமவிதர்கயன்னதிவயா: ஸ்வயம் ஜாம்ப³வான்
முகுந்த³ஶரணம் ஹி மாம் க இஹ ரோத்³து⁴மித்யாலபன் ।
விபோ⁴ ரகு⁴பதே ஹரே ஜய ஜயேத்யலம் முஷ்டிபி⁴-
ஶ்சிரம் தவ ஸமர்சனம் வ்யதி⁴த ப⁴க்தசூடா³மணி: ॥4॥
Meaning
ப⁴வந்தம்-அவிதர்கயன்- - Thee not identifying; அதி-வயா: - due to age; ஸ்வயம் ஜாம்ப³வான் - himself Jaambavaan; முகுந்த-³ஶரணம் - to Mukunda surrendered; ஹி மாம் க:-இஹ - indeed me, who here; ரோத்³து⁴ம்-இதி-ஆலபன் - is to obstruct, thus saying; விபோ⁴ ரகு⁴பதே - O Lord Raama!; ஹரே ஜய ஜய-இதி-அலம் - O Hari! Victory to Thee! Thus; முஷ்டிபி⁴:-சிரம் - with fists for long; தவ ஸமர்சனம் வ்யதி⁴த - Thy worship performed; ப⁴க்தசூடா³மணி: - the crest jewel of the devotees;
Translation
The aged Jaambavaan did not know Thy identity and so exclaimed, 'who has come to obstruct me who has Mukund as his only resort?' As, the crest jewel of the devotees, he was invoking Thee with "O Lord Raam! O Hari! Victory be to Thee!, he worshipped Thee with blows of his fists.
ஶ்லோக:
பு³த்⁴வாத² தேன த³த்தாம் நவரமணீம் வரமணிம் ச பரிக்³ருஹ்ணன் ।
அனுக்³ருஹ்ணன்னமுமாகா³: ஸபதி³ ச ஸத்ராஜிதே மணிம் ப்ராதா³: ॥5॥
Meaning
பு³த்⁴வா-அத² - recognizing (Thee) then; தேன த³த்தாம் - by him was given; நவ-ரமணீம் - to the young girl (his daughter); வர-மணிம் ச - the precious jewel and; பரிக்³ருஹ்ணன் - accepting; அனுக்³ருஹ்ணன்-அமும்- - blessing him; ஆகா³: ஸபதி³ - returning immediately; ச ஸத்ராஜிதே - and to Satraajit; மணிம் ப்ராதா³: - the jewel gave back;
Translation
Finally when Jaambavaan recognized Thee, he gave to Thee his young daughter and the jewel. Thou accepted them and blessed him, and immediately returned and gave back the jewel, the Syamantaka Mani, to Satraajit.
ஶ்லோக:
தத³னு ஸ க²லு ப்³ரீலாலோலோ விலோலவிலோசனாம்
து³ஹிதரமஹோ தீ⁴மான் பா⁴மாம் கி³ரைவ பரார்பிதாம் ।
அதி³த மணினா துப்⁴யம் லப்⁴யம் ஸமேத்ய ப⁴வானபி
ப்ரமுதி³தமனாஸ்தஸ்யைவாதா³ன்மணிம் க³ஹனாஶய: ॥6॥
Meaning
தத³னு ஸ க²லு - thereafter he indeed; ப்³ரீலா-லோல: - shame filled with; விலோல-லோசனாம் - with loving eyes; து³ஹிதரம்-அஹோ - the daughter Oh!; தீ⁴மான் - the intelligent one (Satraajit); பா⁴மான் - Satyabhaamaa; கி³ரா-ஏவ - by words only; பர-அர்பிதாம் - given to another; அதி³த மணினா - gave (along with) the jewel; துப்⁴யம் லப்⁴யம் - to Thee, the worth getting; ஸமேத்ய ப⁴வான்-அபி - having got, Thou also; ப்ரமுதி³த-மனா:- - with a happy mind; தஸ்ய-ஏவ-ஆதா³த்- - to him only gave back; மணிம் - the jewel; க³ஹன-ஆஶய: - deep thinking (Thou);
Translation
Satraajit, the intelligent one, was then filled with shame for his conduct with Thee. He had given away his roving eyed daughter Satyabhaamaa to someone verbally only. He gave her to Thee along with the jewel. Thou, happily, with Thy deep and unfathomable reasoning gave back the jewel, having got what was worth getting (Satyabhaamaa).

வ்ரீலாகுலாம் ரமயதி த்வயி ஸத்யபா⁴மாம்

Meaning
வ்ரீலா-ஆகுலாம் - by shyness overcome; ரமயதி த்வயி - (her) delighting (when) Thou were; ஸத்யபா⁴மாம் - her Satyabhaamaa; கௌந்தேய-தா³ஹ- - the son's of Kunti's burning; கத²யா-அத² - news, then; குரூன் ப்ரயாதே - Thou to Kurukshetra went away; ஹீ - how shameful; கா³ந்தி³னேய-க்ருதவர்ம-கி³ரா - by Akrura and Kritavarmaa's words; நிபாத்ய ஸத்ராஜிதம் - killing Satraajit; ஶதத⁴னு:-மணிம்-ஆஜஹார - Shatadhanu the jewel took away;
Translation
When Thou were delighting the shy Satyabhaamaa, there was the news of Kunti's sons being burnt in the wax palace. So Thou went away to the land of the Kurus. Under the promptings of Akrura and Kritvermaa, Shatadhanu killed Satraajit and took away the jewel.
ஶ்லோக:
ஶோகாத் குரூனுபக³தாமவலோக்ய காந்தாம்
ஹத்வா த்³ருதம் ஶதத⁴னும் ஸமஹர்ஷயஸ்தாம் ।
ரத்னே ஸஶங்க இவ மைதி²லகே³ஹமேத்ய
ராமோ க³தா³ம் ஸமஶிஶிக்ஷத தா⁴ர்தராஷ்ட்ரம் ॥8॥
Meaning
ஶோகாத் - due to grief; குரூன்-உபக³தாம்- - to the country of Kuru's having come; அவலோக்ய காந்தாம் - seeing (Thy) wife; ஹத்வா த்³ருதம் ஶதத⁴னும் - killing quickly Shatadhanu; ஸமஹர்ஷய:-தாம் - appeased her; ரத்னே ஸஶங்க இவ - about the jewel doubting, as though; மைதி²ல-கே³ஹம்-ஏத்ய - to the king of Mithila's abode reaching; ராமோ க³தா³ம் - Balaraam the mace wielding; ஸமஶிஶிக்ஷத - taught well; தா⁴ர்தராஷ்ட்ரம் - to Duryodhana;
Translation
Satyabhaama was overcome with grief and went to Kurukshetra. Seeing her, Thou quickly killed Shatadhanu and made her happy. As though doubting the whereabouts of the jewel, Balaraam went to the abode of the king of Mithilaa. There he very well trained Duryodhana in the art of wielding the mace.

அக்ரூர ஏஷ ப⁴க³வன் ப⁴வதி³ச்ச²யைவ
ஸத்ராஜித: குசரிதஸ்ய யுயோஜ ஹிம்ஸாம் ।
அக்ரூரதோ மணிமனாஹ்ருதவான் புனஸ்த்வம்
தஸ்யைவ பூ⁴திமுபதா⁴துமிதி ப்³ருவந்தி ॥9॥
Meaning
அக்ரூர ஏஷ - Akrura, this; ப⁴க³வன் - O Lord!; ப⁴வத்-இச்ச²யா-ஏவ - by Thy will alone; ஸத்ராஜித: குசரிதஸ்ய - of Satraajit, the notorious; யுயோஜ ஹிம்ஸாம் - caused the death; அக்ரூரத: மணிம்- - from Akrura the jewel; அனாஹ்ருதவான் புன:-த்வம் - did not take back again Thou; தஸ்ய ஏவ பூ⁴திம்- - his alone prosperity; உபதா⁴தும்- - to bring about; இதி ப்³ருவந்தி - so it is said;
Translation
This, Akrura, O Lord! By Thy will alone caused the death of the notorious Satraajit. It is said that with a mind to bring about his prosperity, Thou did not take back the jewel from Akrura.
ஶ்லோக:
ப⁴க்தஸ்த்வயி ஸ்தி²ரதர: ஸ ஹி கா³ந்தி³னேய-
ஸ்தஸ்யைவ காபத²மதி: கத²மீஶ ஜாதா ।
விஜ்ஞானவான் ப்ரஶமவானஹமித்யுதீ³ர்ணம்
க³ர்வம் த்⁴ருவம் ஶமயிதும் ப⁴வதா க்ருதைவ ॥1௦॥
Meaning
ப⁴க்த:-த்வயி - devoted to Thee; ஸ்தி²ரதர: - very firmly; ஸ ஹி கா³ந்தி³னேய: - that indeed Akrura; தஸ்ய-ஏவ - his also; காபத-²மதி: - evil mind; கத²ம்-ஈஶ ஜாதா - how O Lord! was produced; விஜ்ஞானவான் - all knowing; ப்ரஶமவான்-அஹம்- - well self controlled am I; இதி-உதீ³ர்ணம் க³ர்வம் - thus bloated vanity; த்⁴ருவம் ஶமயிதும் - certainly to curb; ப⁴வதா க்ருதா-ஏவ - by Thee was brought about only;
Translation
Akrura was very firmly devoted to Thee. O Lord! How could there be an evil thought in his mind (of killing Satraajit and getting the jewel)? He was bloated with the vanity of having self knowledge and self control. Certainly to curb that, Thou brought this about.
ஶ்லோக:
யாதம் ப⁴யேன க்ருதவர்மயுதம் புனஸ்த-
மாஹூய தத்³வினிஹிதம் ச மணிம் ப்ரகாஶ்ய ।
தத்ரைவ ஸுவ்ரதத⁴ரே வினிதா⁴ய துஷ்யன்
பா⁴மாகுசாந்தஶயன: பவனேஶ பாயா: ॥11॥
Meaning
யாதம் ப⁴யேன - having fled in fear; க்ருதவர்மயுதம் - Kritvarma along with; புன:-தம்-ஆஹூய - again calling him; தத்-வினிஹிதம் ச - with him hidden and; மணிம் ப்ரகாஶ்ய - the jewel bringing out; தத்ர-ஏவ ஸுவ்ரத-த⁴ரே - there only (him) with good deeds, endowed; வினிதா⁴ய துஷ்யன் - retaining and satisfying him; பா⁴மா-குசாந்த-ஶயன: - (on) Satyabhaamaa's bosom reclined; பவனேஶ பாயா: - O Lord of Guruvaayur! Save me;
Translation
Akrura with Kritvarma fled in fear. Thou called him again and brought out the jewel hidden with him. Thou then let him retain the jewel who was of good conduct, and satisfied him. Thou then lived happily with Satyabhaamaa reclining on her bosom. O Lord of Guruvaayur! save me.
