த³ர்வாஸாஸ்ஸுரவனிதாப்ததி³வ்யமால்யம்
ஶக்ராய ஸ்வயமுபதா³ய தத்ர பூ⁴ய: ।
நாகே³ந்த்³ரப்ரதிம்ருதி³தே ஶஶாப ஶக்ரம்
கா க்ஷாந்திஸ்த்வதி³தரதே³வதாம்ஶஜானாம் ॥1॥
Meaning
து³ர்வாஸா:- - the sage Durvaasaa; ஸுர-வனிதா-ஆப்த-தி³வ்ய-மால்யம் - from heavenly nymphs had obtained a divine garland; ஶுக்ராய ஸ்வயம்-உபதா³ய தத்ர பூ⁴ய: - to Indra,having personally given it there then; நாகே³ந்த்³ர-ப்ரதிம்ருதி³தே - by Indra's elephant it being trampled; ஶஶாப ஶக்ரம் - cursed Indra; கா க்ஷாந்தி:- - what forbearance (is there); த்வத்-இதர- - other than Thee; தே³வதா-அம்ஶஜானாம் - who are born of (other than Thee) Devas;
Translation
The sage Durvaasaa once gave a celestial garland to Indra, which he had got from heavenly nymphs. When he saw the garland being crushed by Indra's elephant, he cursed Indra. Where can forbearance be seen except in those born of and blessed by Thee.
ஶ்லோக:
ஶாபேன ப்ரதி²தஜரேத² நிர்ஜரேந்த்³ரே
தே³வேஷ்வப்யஸுரஜிதேஷு நிஷ்ப்ரபே⁴ஷு ।
ஶர்வாத்³யா: கமலஜமேத்ய ஸர்வதே³வா
நிர்வாணப்ரப⁴வ ஸமம் ப⁴வந்தமாபு: ॥2॥
Meaning
ஶாபேன ப்ரதி²த-ஜரே-அத² - due to the curse Indra became aged, then; நிர்ஜர-இந்த்³ரே - Indra, who was ageless; தே³வேஷு-அபி-அஸுர-ஜிதேஷு - when the Devas also were defeated by the Asuras; நிஷ்ப்ரபே⁴ஷு - (and so) had lost their glory; ஶர்வ-ஆத்³யா: - beginning with Shiva; கமலஜம்-ஏத்ய - approaching Brahmaa; ஸர்வ-தே³வா: - all the gods; நிர்வாண-ப்ரபவ⁴ - O Bestower of Salvation!; ஸமம் - with (Shiva); ப⁴வந்தம்-ஆபு: - came to Thee;
Translation
O Bestower of Liberation! Indra known as the unaging one, became aged as a result of Durvaasaa's curse. His followers, the Devas lost all their glory and were defeated by the Asuraas. The gods along with Shiva and others went to Brahmaa and they all took refuge in Thee.
ஶ்லோக:
ப்³ரஹ்மாத்³யை: ஸ்துதமஹிமா சிரம் ததா³னீம்
ப்ராது³ஷ்ஷன் வரத³ புர: பரேண தா⁴ம்னா ।
ஹே தே³வா தி³திஜகுலைர்விதா⁴ய ஸந்தி⁴ம்
பீயூஷம் பரிமத²தேதி பர்யஶாஸ்த்வம் ॥3॥
Meaning
ப்³ரஹ்மா-ஆத்³யை: - by Brahmaa and other gods; ஸ்துத-மஹிமா சிரம் - being sung Thy excellences for long; ததா³னீம் - at that time; ப்ராது³ஷ்ஷன் - appearing; வரத³ - O Bestower of Boons!; புர: - in front (of them); பரேண தா⁴ம்னா - with supreme glory (commanded); ஹே தே³வா - O Gods!; தி³திஜ-குலை:- - with the Asuras,; விதா⁴ய ஸந்தி⁴ம் - making peace,; பீயூஷம் பரிமத²த- - nectar churn out; இதி பர்யஶா:-த்வம் - thus commanded Thee;
Translation
Brahmaa and the other gods sung Thy excellences for long. O Bestower of Boons! Thou then manifested Thyself before them in great glory and commanded them to make peace with the Asuras and then prepare to churn the milk ocean for nectar.
ஶ்லோக:
ஸந்தா⁴னம் க்ருதவதி தா³னவை: ஸுரௌகே⁴
மந்தா²னம் நயதி மதே³ன மந்த³ராத்³ரிம் ।
ப்⁴ரஷ்டேஸ்மின் ப³த³ரமிவோத்³வஹன் க²கே³ந்த்³ரே
ஸத்³யஸ்த்வம் வினிஹிதவான் பய:பயோதௌ⁴ ॥4॥
Meaning
ஸந்தா⁴னம் க்ருதவதி - having made peace; தா³னவை: ஸுரௌகே⁴ - with the Asuras by the gods; மந்தா²னம் நயதி - when carrying the churning rod; மதே³ன மந்த³ர-அத்³ரிம் - with great pride, the Mandara mountain; ப்⁴ரஷ்டே-அஸ்மின் - (when) it fell down; ப³த³ரம்-இவ-உத்³வஹன் - as a berry picking it up; க²கே³ந்த்³ரே ஸத்³ய:-த்வம் - On Garuda immediately Thou; வினிஹிதவான் - placed it; பய:பயோதௌ⁴ - in the milk ocean;
Translation
Devas made peace with the Asuras and with great pride carried the Mandara mountain for use as a churning rod. The mountain fell from their hands on the way. Then Thou seated on Garuda, picked it up as if it were a tiny berry and installed it in the milk ocean.
ஶ்லோக:
ஆதா⁴ய த்³ருதமத² வாஸுகிம் வரத்ராம்
பாதோ²தௌ⁴ வினிஹிதஸர்வபீ³ஜஜாலே ।
ப்ராரப்³தே⁴ மத²னவிதௌ⁴ ஸுராஸுரைஸ்தை-
ர்வ்யாஜாத்த்வம் பு⁴ஜக³முகே²கரோஸ்ஸுராரீன் ॥5॥
Meaning
ஆதா⁴ய த்³ருதம்-அத² - placing quickly then; வாஸுகிம் வரத்ராம் - Vaasuki (snake) (as the ) churning rope; பாதோ²தௌ⁴ - in that milk ocean; வினிஹித-ஸர்வ-பீ³ஜ-ஜாலே - (in which) had been put all kinds of seeds and herbs; ப்ராரப்³தே⁴ மத²ன-விதௌ⁴ - having started the process of churning; ஸுர்-அஸுரை:-தை:- - by those gods and Asuras; வ்யாஜாத்-த்வம் - Thou by a trick; பு⁴ஜக-³முகே²-அகரோ:- - on the side of the serpent's mouth (Thou) put; ஸுராரீன் - the Asuras;
Translation
Then quickly placing Vasuki snake as the churning rope, the Devas and Asuras started the process of churning the milk ocean in which all kinds of herbs and seeds had been put. Thou then cleverly made the Asuras hold the head end of the snake.
ஶ்லோக:
க்ஷுப்³தா⁴த்³ரௌ க்ஷுபி⁴தஜலோத³ரே ததா³னீம்
து³க்³தா⁴ப்³தௌ⁴ கு³ருதரபா⁴ரதோ நிமக்³னே ।
தே³வேஷு வ்யதி²ததமேஷு தத்ப்ரியைஷீ
ப்ராணைஷீ: கமட²தனும் கடோ²ரப்ருஷ்டா²ம் ॥6॥
Meaning
க்ஷுப்³த-⁴ஆத்³ரௌ - (when) the mountain (used as) a churning rod; க்ஷுபி⁴த-ஜல-உத³ரே - in the waters fully stirred; ததா³னீம் - then; து³க்³த-⁴அப்³தௌ⁴ - of the milk ocean; கு³ருதர-பா⁴ரத: - because of its (mountain's) heavy weight; நிமக்³னே - sank; தே³வேஷு வ்யதி²ததமேஷு - the Devas becoming very worried; தத்-ப்ரியைஷீ - their (the Deva's) wellwisher (Thou); ப்ராணைஷீ: - assumed; கமட-²தனும் - a tortoise form; கடோ²ர-ப்ருஷ்டா²ம் - with a hard back;
Translation
When the Mandara mountain as a churning rod had fully stirred the waters of the milk ocean to its depth, it sank due to its own weight. The Devas became very worried. Thee who are their well wisher, assumed the form of a tortoise with a hard back.
ஶ்லோக:
வஜ்ராதிஸ்தி²ரதரகர்பரேண விஷ்ணோ
விஸ்தாராத்பரிக³தலக்ஷயோஜனேன ।
அம்போ⁴தே⁴: குஹரக³தேன வர்ஷ்மணா த்வம்
நிர்மக்³னம் க்ஷிதித⁴ரனாத²முன்னினேத² ॥7॥
Meaning
வஜ்ர-அதி-ஸ்தி²ர-கர்பரேண - with the back more hard than the thunderbolt; விஷ்ணோ - O All Pervading being!; விஸ்தாராத்- - and in extent (width); பரிக³த-லக்ஷ-யோஜனேன - exceeding a lakh of Yojanas; அம்போ⁴தே⁴: குஹர-க³தேன - (the rod) which had sunk deep into the ocean; வர்ஷ்மணா த்வம் - with such a body Thou; நிர்ம்க்³னம் க்ஷிதித⁴ரனாத²ம்- - the great mountain which had sunk (into the sea); உன்னினேத² - (Thou) lifted up;
Translation
O All pervading Being! by diving deep into the ocean Thou lifted up the sinking mountain on Thy back which was harder than a thunderbolt and more than a lakh of Yojanas in width.
ஶ்லோக:
உன்மக்³னே ஜ²டிதி ததா³ த⁴ராத⁴ரேந்த்³ரே
நிர்மேது²ர்த்³ருட⁴மிஹ ஸம்மதே³ன ஸர்வே ।
ஆவிஶ்ய த்³விதயக³ணேபி ஸர்பராஜே
வைவஶ்யம் பரிஶமயன்னவீவ்ருத⁴ஸ்தான் ॥8॥
Meaning
உன்மக்³னே - (the mountain) having come up; ஜ²டிதி ததா³ - quickly then; த⁴ராத⁴ரேந்த்³ரே - the mountain,; நிர்மேது²:-த்³ருட⁴ம்-இஹ - they churned with great force, here; ஸம்மதே³ன ஸர்வே - (and) with enthusiasm all of them (the Asuras and the Devas); ஆவிஶ்ய - (Thou) entering; த்³விதயக³ணே- - into both the parties; அபி ஸர்பராஜே - and also the serpent Vasuki; வைவஶ்யம் - their fatigue; பரிஶமயன் - removing; அவீவ்ருத:⁴ தான் - invigorated them;
Translation
When the mountain was lifted up, they, the Devas and Asuras all churned with great force and enthusiasm. Thou entering into both the parties and also into the snake Vasuki, removed their fatigue and invigorated them.
ஶ்லோக:
உத்³தா³மப்⁴ரமணஜவோன்னமத்³கி³ரீந்த்³ர-
ந்யஸ்தைகஸ்தி²ரதரஹஸ்தபங்கஜம் த்வாம் ।
அப்⁴ராந்தே விதி⁴கி³ரிஶாத³ய: ப்ரமோதா³-
து³த்³ப்⁴ராந்தா நுனுவுருபாத்தபுஷ்பவர்ஷா: ॥9॥
Meaning
உத்³தா³ம-ப்⁴ரமண-ஜவ- - by the powerful speed of the whirling; உன்னமத்-கி³ரீந்த்³ர- - the mountain having come up; ந்யஸ்த-ஏக-ஸ்தி²ரதர-ஹஸ்த-பங்கஜம் - placed one strong lotus hand firmly; த்வாம் - Thou; அப்⁴ராந்தே - in the heavens; விதி⁴-கி³ரிஶ-ஆத³ய: - Brahmaa Shiva and other gods; ப்ரமோதா³த்-உத்³ப்⁴ராந்தா - overwhelmed with joy; நுனுவு:- - praised Thee; உபாத்த-புஷ்ப-வர்ஷா: - and shed showers of flowers;
Translation
When the Mandara mountain rose up because of the powerful speed of the whirling, Thou placed Thy one lotus hand firmly on it, to keep it in position. Brahmaa Shiva and other gods were overwhelmed with joy and praised Thee as they shed showers of flowers.
ஶ்லோக:
தை³த்யௌகே⁴ பு⁴ஜக³முகா²னிலேன தப்தே
தேனைவ த்ரித³ஶகுலேபி கிஞ்சிதா³ர்தே ।
காருண்யாத்தவ கில தே³வ வாரிவாஹா:
ப்ராவர்ஷன்னமரக³ணான்ன தை³த்யஸங்கா⁴ன் ॥1௦॥
Meaning
தை³த்யௌகே⁴ - (when) the group of Asuras; பு⁴ஜக-³முக-²அனிலேன - by the fire from the mouth of the serpent (the poisonous breath); தப்தே - were scorched (tormented); தேன-ஏவ - by that even; த்ரித³ஶகுலே-அபி - the Devas also; கிஞ்சித்-ஆர்தே - were troubled a little; காருண்யாத்-தவ - by Thy compassion; கில தே³வ - Indeed O Lord!; வாரிவாஹ: ப்ராவர்ஷன்- - The clouds were made to rain; அமரக³ணான்- - on the Devas; ந தை³த்ய-ஸங்கா⁴ன் - not on the Asuras;
Translation
The group of Asuras were scorched by the fire emitting from the mouth of the serpent. The Devas were also to some extent troubled. O Lord! By Thy compassion the clouds were made to rain on the Devas to cool them, but not on the Asuras.
ஶ்லோக:
உத்³ப்⁴ராம்யத்³ப³ஹுதிமினக்ரசக்ரவாலே
தத்ராப்³தௌ⁴ சிரமதி²தேபி நிர்விகாரே ।
ஏகஸ்த்வம் கரயுக³க்ருஷ்டஸர்பராஜ:
ஸம்ராஜன் பவனபுரேஶ பாஹி ரோகா³த் ॥11॥
Meaning
உத்³ப்⁴ராம்யத் - ejecting up; ப³ஹு-திமி-னக்ர-சக்ரவாலே - many fish crocodiles and other aquatic creatures; தத்ர-அப்³தௌ⁴ - there (when) the ocean; சிர-மதி²தே-அபி - in spite being churned for long; நிர்விகாரே - remained unchanged; ஏக:-த்வம் - Thou alone; கர-யுக-³க்ருஷ்ட-ஸர்பராஜ: - with (Thy) two hands pulled the (two ends) of the serpent king; ஸம்ராஜன் - shining brightly; பவனபுரேஶ - O Lord of Guruvaayur!; பாஹி ரோகா³த் - relieve (me of my) diseases;
Translation
In spite of being churned for long, the ocean remained unchanged, though many fish crocodile and other aquatic creatures were thrown up. Thou alone, then, shining brilliantly, with Thy two hands pulled the two ends of the serpent. O Lord of Guruvaayur! Relieve me of my diseases.
