ஸைரந்த்⁴ர்யாஸ்தத³னு சிரம் ஸ்மராதுராயா
யாதோபூ⁴: ஸுலலிதமுத்³த⁴வேன ஸார்த⁴ம் ।
ஆவாஸம் த்வது³பக³மோத்ஸவம் ஸதை³வ
த்⁴யாயந்த்யா: ப்ரதிதி³னவாஸஸஜ்ஜிகாயா: ॥1॥
Meaning
ஸைரந்த்⁴ர்யா:- - of Sairandhree (the female who gave Thee unguents); தத³னு சிரம் - thereafter, since long; ஸ்மர-ஆதுராயா - by Kaama Deva who was afflicted; யாத:-அபூ⁴: - (Thou) went; ஸுலலிதம்- - well adorned; உத்³த⁴வேன ஸார்த⁴ம் - with Uddhava; ஆவாஸம் - to (her) house; த்வத்-உபக³ம-உத்ஸவம் - Thy arriving festival; ஸதா³-ஏவ - always alone; த்⁴யாயந்த்யா: - she was thinking of; ப்ரதிதி³ன-வாஸ-ஸஜ்ஜிகாயா: - (and so) everyday adorned herself and decorated her house;
Translation
Thou went well adorned with Uddhava to the house of Sairandhree, the female attendant who had given Thee unguents and was long stricken with love for Thee. She was thinking of Thee every day and adorned herself and decorated her house everyday in the expectation of the festive event of meeting Thee.
ஶ்லோக:
உபக³தே த்வயி பூர்ணமனோரதா²ம் ப்ரமத³ஸம்ப்⁴ரமகம்ப்ரபயோத⁴ராம் ।
விவித⁴மானநமாத³த⁴தீம் முதா³ ரஹஸி தாம் ரமயாஞ்சக்ருஷே ஸுக²ம் ॥2॥
Meaning
உபக³தே த்வயி - at Thy arrival; பூர்ணமனோரதா²ம் - her wish fulfilled; ப்ரமத-³ஸம்ப்⁴ரம- - with joy and excitement; கம்ப்ர-பயோத⁴ராம் - whose breasts were quivering; விவித-⁴மானநம்- - various honours; ஆத³த⁴தீம் முதா³ - who was offering joyfully; ரஹஸி தாம் - secretly to her; ரமயான்-சக்ருஷே - (Thou) delighted her; ஸுக²ம் - happily;
Translation
At Thy arrival, all her wishes were fulfilled and she joyfully honoured Thee with various offerings, with her breasts heaving in excitement. Thou happily delighted her in privacy.
ஶ்லோக:
ப்ருஷ்டா வரம் புனரஸாவவ்ருணோத்³வராகீ
பூ⁴யஸ்த்வயா ஸுரதமேவ நிஶாந்தரேஷு ।
ஸாயுஜ்யமஸ்த்விதி வதே³த் பு³த⁴ ஏவ காமம்
ஸாமீப்யமஸ்த்வனிஶமித்யபி நாப்³ரவீத் கிம் ॥3॥
Meaning
ப்ருஷ்டா வரம் - asked what boon she wanted; புன:-அஸௌ- - then at that time, this (pitiable woman); அவ்ருணோத்-வராகீ - asked for, the pitiable one; பூ⁴ய:-த்வயா - again with Thee; ஸுரதம்-ஏவ - enjoyment only; நிஶா-அந்தரேஷு - on other nights; ஸாயுஜ்யம்-அஸ்து- - let me have union with Thee; இதி வதே³த் பு³த⁴ ஏவ - thus will say an enlightened one only; காமம் - definitely; ஸாமீப்யம்-அஸ்து-அனிஶம்- - let me have nearness with Thee always; இதி-அபி- - thus also; ந-அப்³ரவீத் கிம் - did not say, how come (why);
Translation
When she was asked by Thee as to what boon she wanted, the stupid woman prayed that she may get to enjoy in the same manner with Thee on other nights also. Indeed only an enlightened person will ask for 'Saayujya' (becoming one with Thee) liberation. But at least she could ask for 'Saamipya' (being always close to Thee). How come she did not ask for even that!
ஶ்லோக:
ததோ ப⁴வான் தே³வ நிஶாஸு காஸுசின்ம்ருகீ³த்³ருஶம் தாம் நிப்⁴ருதம் வினோத³யன் ।
அதா³து³பஶ்லோக இதி ஶ்ருதம் ஸுதம் ஸ நாரதா³த் ஸாத்த்வததந்த்ரவித்³ப³ப³பௌ⁴ ॥4॥
Meaning
தத: ப⁴வான் தே³வ - then, Thou O Effulgent One!; நிஶாஸு காஸுசித்- - on some nights; ம்ருகீ³த்³ருஶம் தாம் நிப்⁴ருதம் - her, the doe eyed one, in secret; வினோத³யன் அதா³த்- - giving delight, gave; உபஶ்லோக இதி - Upashloka named; ஶ்ருதம் ஸுதம் - well known son; ஸ நாரதா³த் - he (the son) from Naarada; ஸாத்த்வத-தந்த்ர-வித்³ ப³பௌ⁴ - in the (knowledge of) Saatvata Tantra became well versed;
Translation
O Lord! Subsequently Thou on some nights delighted the doe eyed one in secret. Thou gave her a son who came to be well known as Upashloka. He learnt the knowledge in Saattvat Tantra from Naarada and shone as an exponent there of.

அக்ரூரமந்தி³ரமிதோத² ப³லோத்³த⁴வாப்⁴யா-
மப்⁴யர்சிதோ ப³ஹு நுதோ முதி³தேன தேன ।
ஏனம் விஸ்ருஜ்ய விபினாக³தபாண்ட³வேய-
வ்ருத்தம் விவேதி³த² ததா² த்⁴ருதராஷ்ட்ர்சேஷ்டாம் ॥5॥
Meaning
அக்ரூர-மந்தி³ரம்- - to Akrura's house; இத:-அத² - going then; ப³ல-உத்³த⁴வாப்⁴யாம்- - with Balaraama and Uddhava; அப்⁴யர்சித: ப³ஹு நுத: - honoured (and) very much praised; முதி³தேன தேன - by him (Akrura) who was very delighted; ஏனம் விஸ்ருஜ்ய - him (Akrura) sending away; விபின-ஆக³த- - from the forest having returned; பாண்ட³வேய-வ்ருத்தம் - the Paandava's news; விவேதி³த² ததா² - come to know and; த்⁴ருதராஷ்ட்ர-சேஷ்டாம் - Dhritaraashtraa's doings;
Translation
Thou went with Balaraama and Uddhava to Akrura's house. Akrura received Thee with high honours and worshipped Thee with hymns. Thou sent away Akrura to gather the news of the Pandavaas who had returned from the forest and also news about Dhritaraashtra's doings.

விகா⁴தாஜ்ஜாமாது: பரமஸுஹ்ருதோ³ போ⁴ஜன்ருபதே-
ர்ஜராஸந்தே⁴ ருந்த⁴த்யனவதி⁴ருஷாந்தே⁴த² மது²ராம் ।
ரதா²த்³யைர்த்³யோர்லப்³தை⁴: கதிபயப³லஸ்த்வம் ப³லயுத-
ஸ்த்ரயோவிம்ஶத்யக்ஷௌஹிணி தது³பனீதம் ஸமஹ்ருதா²: ॥6॥
Meaning
விகா⁴தாத்-ஜாமாது: - by the slaying of the son in law; பரம-ஸுஹ்ருத:³ - and great friend; போ⁴ஜ-ன்ருபதே:- - the king of Bhoja (Kansa); ஜராஸந்தே⁴ ருந்த⁴தி- - when Jaraasandha besieged (Mathura); அனவதி⁴-ருஷா-அந்தே⁴- - blinded by unbounded rage; அத² மது²ராம் - then Mathura; ரத-²ஆத்³யை:-த்³யோ:-லப்³தை⁴: - with the chariot etc.from the heaven obtained; கதிபய-ப³ல:-த்வம் - with a few soldiers, Thou; ப³ல-யுத:- - along with Balaraama; த்ரய:-விம்ஶதி-அக்ஷௌஹிணி - 23 akshauhini (army); தத்-உபனீதம் ஸமஹ்ருதா²: - brought by him, destroyed;
Translation
Jaraasandha was blinded with rage when his friend and son in law Kansa was killed. He besieged Mathura. Along with Balaraama, and a few soldiers, chariot and charioteer called from heaven Thou destroyed his army of 23 Akshauhini brought by him.

ப³த்³த⁴ம் ப³லாத³த² ப³லேன ப³லோத்தரம் த்வம்
பூ⁴யோ ப³லோத்³யமரஸேன முமோசிதை²னம் ।
நிஶ்ஶேஷதி³க்³ஜயஸமாஹ்ருதவிஶ்வஸைன்யாத்
கோன்யஸ்ததோ ஹி ப³லபௌருஷவாம்ஸ்ததா³னீம் ॥7॥
Meaning
ப³த்³த⁴ம் ப³லாத்-அத² - tied up forcefully then; ப³லேன ப³லோத்தரம் - by Balaraama (him) who was of extraordinary strength; த்வம் பூ⁴ய: - Thou again; ப³ல-உத்³யம-ரஸேன - wanting (him Jaraasandha) to come back with an army to fight; முமோசித-²ஏனம் - released him; நிஶ்ஶேஷ-தி³க்- - of all the directions; ஜய-ஸமாஹ்ருத- - conquering and obtaining; விஶ்வ-ஸைன்யாத் - the many armies; க:-அன்ய:-தத: ஹி - who else than him indeed; ப³ல-பௌருஷவான்- - more strong and powerful; ததா³னீம் - at that time;
Translation
Jaraasandha of extraordinary strength was forcefully tied up by Balaraama. Thou wanted him to come back with an army, so Thou released him. At that time there was no one more powerful than him for having conquered all the kings in all the directions and who commandeered their armies.
ஶ்லோக:
ப⁴க்³ன: ஸ லக்³னஹ்ருத³யோபி ந்ருபை: ப்ரணுன்னோ
யுத்³த⁴ம் த்வயா வ்யதி⁴த ஷோட³ஶக்ருத்வ ஏவம் ।
அக்ஷௌஹிணீ: ஶிவ ஶிவாஸ்ய ஜக⁴ந்த² விஷ்ணோ
ஸம்பூ⁴ய ஸைகனவதித்ரிஶதம் ததா³னீம் ॥8॥
Meaning
ப⁴க்³ன: ஸ - broken, he; லக்³ன-ஹ்ருத³ய:-அபி - and with a defeated heart also; ந்ருபை: ப்ரணுன்ன: - by the kings prompted; யுத்³த⁴ம் த்வயா வ்யதி⁴த - battled (he) with Thee; ஷோட³ஶக்ருத்வ:-ஏவம் - thus 16 times; அக்ஷௌஹிணீ: - (with) Akshauhini armies; ஶிவ ஶிவ-அஸ்ய - what a wonder, of his; ஜக⁴ந்த² - destroyed; விஷ்ணோ - O All Pervading Lord!; ஸம்பூ⁴ய - altogether; ஸ-ஏக-னவதி-த்ரிஶதம் - one and three hundred ninety times (391); ததா³னீம் - then (in the battles);
Translation
He was broken hearted and humiliated by defeat in the battle. He attacked Thee sixteen times prompted by the smaller kings. O Vishnu! Thou destroyed 391 of his Akshauhini armies altogether. What a wonder!
ஶ்லோக:
அஷ்டாத³ஶேஸ்ய ஸமரே ஸமுபேயுஷி த்வம்
த்³ருஷ்ட்வா புரோத² யவனம் யவனத்ரிகோட்யா ।
த்வஷ்ட்ரா விதா⁴ப்ய புரமாஶு பயோதி⁴மத்⁴யே

Meaning
அஷ்டாத³ஶே-அஸ்ய - eighteenth his; ஸமரே ஸமுபேயுஷி - battle (attack) was immanent; த்வம் த்³ருஷ்ட்வா புர:-அத² - Thou seeing him in front then; யவனம் யவன-த்ரிகோட்யா - the Yavana king with 3 crore Yavanas; த்வஷ்ட்ரா விதா⁴ப்ய - by Vishwakarma getting built; புரம்-ஆஶு - a city, soon; பயோதி⁴-மத்⁴யே - in the middle of the sea; தத்ர-அத² யோக-³ப³லத: - there then, by Thy yogic powers; ஸ்வ-ஜனான்-அனைஷீ: - Thy people took (there);
Translation
The eighteenth attack by Jaraasandha was immanent and Thou saw the Yavana king in front with 3 crore Yavanas. Thou soon got a city built in the middle of the sea by Vishwakarmaa and had Thy people transferred there, by Thy Yogic power.

பத³ப்⁴யாம் த்வாம் பத்³மமாலீ சகித இவ புரான்னிர்க³தோ தா⁴வமானோ

Meaning
பத³ப்⁴யாம் த்வம் - by foot Thou; பத்³மமாலீ - adorning a lotus garland; சகித இவ - feigning fright (surprise); புராத்-னிர்க³த: தா⁴வமான: - from the city went out running; ம்லேச்ச-²ஈஶேன-அனுயாத: - by the Yavana king, being followed (pursued); வத-⁴ஸுக்ருத-விஹீனேன - being killed, of meritorious deeds devoid of; ஶைலே ந்யலைஷீ: - into the mountain was led; ஸுப்தேன-அங்க்⁴ர்யா-ஹதேன - by him who was sleeping, was with foot kicked; த்³ருதம்-அத² முசுகுந்தே³ன - soon then by Muchukunda; ப⁴ஸ்மீ-க்ருதே-அஸ்மின் - to ashes reduced when he was (Jaraasandha); பூ⁴பாய-அஸ்மை கு³ஹாந்தே - for this king, in the cave; ஸுலலித-வபுஷா - with a charming form; தஸ்தி²ஷே ப⁴க்திபா⁴ஜே - manifested (Thou) for the devout;
Translation
Adorned with a lotus garland, Thou ran from the city on foot feigning fright and surprise. The Yavana king who was devoid of meritorious deeds, in order to be blessed by being killed by Thee, pursued Thee. Thou then led him into the cave of a mountain, where king Muchukund lay asleep. Mistaking the king for Thee, the Yavana kicked him and was instantly reduced to ashes by the angry look of the awakened king. Thou then manifested Thyself in a charming form for the benefit of the devout king.

ஐக்ஷ்வாகோஹம் விரக்தோஸ்ம்யகி²லன்ருபஸுகே² த்வத்ப்ரஸாதை³ககாங்க்ஷீ
ஹா தே³வேதி ஸ்துவந்தம் வரவிததிஷு தம் நிஸ்ப்ருஹம் வீக்ஷ்ய ஹ்ருஷ்யன் ।
முக்தேஸ்துல்யாம் ச ப⁴க்திம் து⁴தஸகலமலாம் மோக்ஷமப்யாஶு த³த்வா
கார்யம் ஹிம்ஸாவிஶுத்³த்⁴யை தப இதி ச ததா³ ப்ராத்த² லோகப்ரதீத்யை ॥11॥
Meaning
ஐக்ஷ்வாக:-அஹம் - of the Ikshwaaku dynasty I (am); விரக்த:-அஸ்மி- - dispassionate (I) am; அகி²ல-ன்ருப-ஸுகே² - in the many royal pleasures; த்வத்-ப்ரஸாத-³ - Thy grace; ஐக-காங்க்ஷீ - alone am desiring; ஹா தே³வ-இதி - O Lord! Thus; ஸ்துவந்தம் - him who was praising Thee; வர-விததிஷு தம் நிஸ்ப்ருஹம் - for the multitudes of boons him desire less; வீக்ஷ்ய ஹ்ருஷ்யன் - seeing and so gladdened (Thou); முக்தே:-துல்யாம் ச ப⁴க்திம் - liberation, like, and Bhakti; து⁴த-ஸகல-மலாம் - (which) washes off all sins; மோக்ஷம்-அபி-ஆஶு த³த்வா - liberation also soon conferred; கார்யம் ஹிம்ஸா-விஶுத்³த்⁴யை - should do (penance) for purifying the deed of having caused pain; தப இதி ச ததா³ - penance thus and then; ப்ராத்த² லோக-ப்ரதீத்யை - (Thou) said for the world's instruction;
Translation
I am of the Ikshwaaku dynasty, O Lord! I am dispassionate towards the many royal pleasures. My only desire is for Thy grace.' Thus he said praising Thee. Thou were greatly gladdened to see that the king did not seek any of the multitude of boons. Thou conferred on him Bhakti which is as good as or equal to Mukti (liberation). Thou also conferred on him liberation which washes off all sins. Yet to set an example for the world, Thou told him to do penance to purify the deeds of having caused pain to people during his rule.

தத³னு மது²ராம் க³த்வா ஹத்வா சமூம் யவனாஹ்ருதாம்
மக³த⁴பதினா மார்கே³ ஸைன்யை: புரேவ நிவாரித: ।

Meaning
தத³னு மது²ராம் க³த்வா - there after going to Mathura; ஹத்வா சமூம் - destroying the army; யவன-ஆஹ்ருதாம் - brought by the Yavana; மக³த⁴பதினா - by the king of Magadha (Jaraasandha); மார்கே³ ஸைன்யை: புரா-இவ - on the way with armies like before; நிவாரித: - being stopped; சரம-விஜயம் - the last victory; த³ர்பாய-அஸ்மை - for (his) pride for him; ப்ரதா³ய பலாயித: - giving (and) fleeing; ஜலதி⁴-னக³ரீம் யாத: - to the ocean city (Dwaarakaa) went; வாதாலயேஶ்வர - O Lord of Guruvaayur!; பாஹி மாம் - save me;
Translation
After that, going to Mathura Thou destroyed the army brought by the Yavana while on Thy way, like before, the armies of the king of Magadha (Jaraasandha) obstructed Thee. To inflate his pride, Thou gave him the last (eighteenth) victory by fleeing to the ocean city of Dwaarakaa. O Lord of Guruvaayur! save me.
