ஶ்லோக:
ஹிரண்யாக்ஷே போத்ரிப்ரவரவபுஷா தே³வ ப⁴வதா
ஹதே ஶோகக்ரோத⁴க்³லபிதத்⁴ருதிரேதஸ்ய ஸஹஜ: ।
ஹிரண்யப்ராரம்ப:⁴ கஶிபுரமராராதிஸத³ஸி
ப்ரதிஜ்ஞமாதேனே தவ கில வதா⁴ர்த²ம் மது⁴ரிபோ ॥1॥
Meaning
ஹிரண்யாக்ஷே (ஹதே) - (when) Hiranyaaksha (was killed); போத்ரி-ப்ரவர-வபுஷா - by (Thee) in the form of the exalted Boar; தே³வ ப⁴வதா - O Lord! By Thee; ஹதே - was killed (then); ஶோக-க்ரோத-⁴க்³லபித-த்⁴ருதி:- - (his brother) who had lost mental balance due to grief and anger; ஏதஸ்ய ஸஹஜ: - his brother; ஹிரண்ய-ப்ராரம்ப:⁴ கஶிபு:- - Kashipu' whose name started with 'Hiranya'; அமர-அராதி-ஸத³ஸி - in the assembly of the enemy of the Devas (ie Asuras); ப்ரதிஜ்ஞாம்-ஆதேனே - an oath took; தவ கில வதா⁴ர்த²ம் - for killing Thee, it is said; மது⁴ரிபோ - O Lord! Slayer of Madhu;
Translation
O Lord! Slayer of Madhu! When Hiranyaaksha was killed by Thee, incarnate as the Divine Boar, his brother named Hiranyakashipu was smitten with sorrow and anger. In the assembly of the Asuras he swore to kill Thee.
ஶ்லோக:
விதா⁴தாரம் கோ⁴ரம் ஸ க²லு தபஸித்வா நசிரத:
புர: ஸாக்ஷாத்குர்வன் ஸுரனரம்ருகா³த்³யைரனித⁴னம் ।
வரம் லப்³த்⁴வா த்³ருப்தோ ஜக³தி³ஹ ப⁴வன்னாயகமித³ம்
பரிக்ஷுந்த³ன்னிந்த்³ராத³ஹரத தி³வம் த்வாமக³ணயன் ॥2॥
Meaning
விதா⁴தாரம் கோ⁴ரம் - to Brahmaa, with intensity; ஸ க²லு தபஸித்வா - he, indeed, performed austerities; ந-சிரத: புர: ஸாக்ஷாத்-குர்வன் - soon, caused him to appear; ஸுர-னர-ம்ருக-³ஆத்³யை:- - by god, man, beast etc; அனித⁴னம் வரம் லப்³த்⁴வா - of not being killed, the boon getting; த்³ப்த: - (became) arrogant; ஜக³த்-இஹ - here, in this world; ப⁴வன்-னாயகம்-இத³ம் - which has Thee for its Lord; பரிக்ஷுந்த³ன்- - tormenting; இந்த்³ராத்-அஹரத் தி³வம் - from Indra, snatched the heavens; த்வாம்-அக³ண்யன் - disregarding Thee;
Translation
He quickly compelled Brahmaa to appear before him by performing severe austerities and made him give a boon that he would not be killed by god, man or beast etc. As a result of the boon he became arrogant and tormented the whole world which has Thee as its Lord. Disregarding Thee, he even snatched the heavens from Indra.
ஶ்லோக:
நிஹந்தும் த்வாம் பூ⁴யஸ்தவ பத³மவாப்தஸ்ய ச ரிபோ-
ர்ப³ஹிர்த்³ருஷ்டேரந்தர்த³தி⁴த² ஹ்ருத³யே ஸூக்ஷ்மவபுஷா ।
நத³ன்னுச்சைஸ்தத்ராப்யகி²லபு⁴வனாந்தே ச ம்ருக³யன்
பி⁴யா யாதம் மத்வா ஸ க²லு ஜிதகாஶீ நிவவ்ருதே ॥3॥
Meaning
நிஹந்தும் த்வாம் பூ⁴ய:- - to kill Thee then; தவ பத³ம்-அவாப்தஸ்ய - who had reached Thy abode; ச ரிபோ:-ப³ஹிர்த்³ருஷ்டே:- - and from (this) enemy's physical eyes; அந்தர்த³தி⁴த² - (Thou) disappeared; ஹ்ருத³யே ஸூக்ஷ்ம-வபுஷா - into the heart, in a subtle form; நந்த³ன்-உச்சை:-தத்ர-அபி- - roaring loudly, even there (in Vaikuntha); அகி²ல-பு⁴வன்-அந்தே ச - and in all the other worlds as well; ம்ருக³யன் - searching; பி⁴யா யாதம் மத்வா - (Thou had) gone away for fear, thinking; ஸ க²லு ஜிதகாஶீ - he ,indeed, thought that he had won; நிவவ்ருதே - returned;
Translation
To kill Thee, he even went to Thy abode Vaikuntha. Thou disappeared from his gross vision and entered into his heart in a subtle form. Roaring aloud he searched for Thee in all the three worlds, and not finding Thee, he thought that Thou had fled in fear. Considering himself the winner he returned home.
ஶ்லோக:
ததோஸ்ய ப்ரஹ்லாத:³ ஸமஜனி ஸுதோ க³ர்ப⁴வஸதௌ
முனேர்வீணாபாணேரதி⁴க³தப⁴வத்³ப⁴க்திமஹிமா ।
ஸ வை ஜாத்யா தை³த்ய: ஶிஶுரபி ஸமேத்ய த்வயி ரதிம்
க³தஸ்த்வத்³ப⁴க்தானாம் வரத³ பரமோதா³ஹரணதாம் ॥4॥
Meaning
தத:-அஸ்ய - then, to him; ப்ரஹ்லாத:³ ஸமஜனி ஸுத: - Prahlaad was born as a son; க³ர்ப⁴வஸதௌ - while still in the womb; முனே:-வீணா-பாணே:- - from the sage Naarada; அதி⁴க³த- - learning; ப⁴வத்-ப⁴க்தி-மஹிமா - the glory of devotion to Thee; ஸ வை ஜாத்யா தை³த்ய: - though he was by birth an Asura; ஶிஶு:-அபி - and a child also; ஸமேத்ய த்வயி ரதிம் - attaining,love towards Thee, intense love; க³த: த்வத் ப⁴க்தானாம் - (he) became, among Thy devotees; வரத³ - O Bestower of Boons!; பரம-உதா³ஹரணதாம் (க³த:) - the most outstanding example;
Translation
To him was born a son named Prahlaad. Even when he was in the womb, he had learnt the glory of devotion to Thee from sage Naarada. Though by birth he was an Asura, and just a child, O Bestower of Boons! He had intense love for Thee, and became the most outstanding example for all Thy devotees.
ஶ்லோக:
ஸுராரீணாம் ஹாஸ்யம் தவ சரணதா³ஸ்யம் நிஜஸுதே
ஸ த்³ருஷ்ட்வா து³ஷ்டாத்மா கு³ருபி⁴ரஶிஶிக்ஷச்சிரமமும் ।
கு³ருப்ரோக்தம் சாஸாவித³மித³மப⁴த்³ராய த்³ருட⁴மி-
த்யபாகுர்வன் ஸர்வம் தவ சரணப⁴க்த்யைவ வவ்ருதே⁴ ॥ 5 ॥
Meaning
ஸுராரீணாம் ஹாஸ்யம் - the ridicule of the Asuras; தவ சரண-தா³ஸ்யம் - (and) devotion to Thy feet; நிஜ-ஸுதே ஸ த்³ருஷ்ட்வா - of his son, he seeing; து³ஷ்டாத்மா - the evil minded (Hiranyakashipu); கு³ருபி⁴:-அஶிஶிக்ஷத்- - by the teachers made (him) learn; சிரம்-அமும் - him for a long time; கு³ரு-ப்ரோக்தம் ச-அஸௌ- - and (but) he, all that was said by the teachers; இத³ம்-இத³ம்-அப⁴த்³ராய த்³ருட⁴ம்-இதி - all this will certainly cause evil, thus; அபாகுர்வன் ஸர்வம் - rejecting all; தவ சரண ப⁴க்த்யா-ஏவ - by devotion to Thy feet alone; வவ்ருதே⁴ - grew up;
Translation
The evil minded Hiranyakashipu had Prahlaad brain washed by competent instructors for long, because he saw signs of devotion to Thee and also the ridicule of the Asuras in his son. He however rejected all their teachings as leading only to evil and grew up with his devotional zeal.
ஶ்லோக:
அதீ⁴தேஷு ஶ்ரேஷ்ட²ம் கிமிதி பரிப்ருஷ்டேத² தனயே
ப⁴வத்³ப⁴க்திம் வர்யாமபி⁴க³த³தி பர்யாகுலத்⁴ருதி: ।
கு³ருப்⁴யோ ரோஷித்வா ஸஹஜமதிரஸ்யேத்யபி⁴வித³ன்
வதோ⁴பாயானஸ்மின் வ்யதனுத ப⁴வத்பாத³ஶரணே ॥6॥
Meaning
அதீ⁴தேஷு ஶ்ரேஷ்ட²ம் கிம்- - among what (you have) learned, what is the best?'; இதி பரிப்ருஷ்டே- - thus when asked; அத² தனயே - then the son,; ப⁴வத்-ப⁴க்திம் வர்யாம்- - devotion to Thee as the greatest; அபி⁴க³த³தி - replied; பர்யாகுல-த்⁴ருதி: - (He, hiranyakashipu) agitation minded; கு³ருப்⁴ய: ரோஷித்வா - (and) got angry with the teachers; ஸஹஜ-மதி:-அஸ்ய- - (this) is his natural inclination'; இதி-அபி⁴வித³ன் - thus understanding; வதோ⁴பாயான்- - means of killing; அஸ்மின் வ்யதனுத - him (Prahlaad) planned; ப⁴வத்-பாத-³ஶரணே - at Thy feet, who had taken refuge;
Translation
On being asked about what was the best that he had learned, he answered that devotion to Thee was the greatest. Agitated at this, Hiranyakashipu was very angry with the teachers, but they told him that this was his son's natural inclination. At this he started planning ways to kill Prahlaad who was Thy great devotee, having taken refuge at Thy feet.

ஸ ஶூலைராவித்³த:⁴ ஸுப³ஹு மதி²தோ தி³க்³கஜ³க³ணை-
ர்மஹாஸர்பைர்த³ஷ்டோப்யனஶனக³ராஹாரவிது⁴த: ।
கி³ரீந்த்³ரவக்ஷிப்தோப்யஹஹ! பரமாத்மன்னயி விபோ⁴
த்வயி ந்யஸ்தாத்மத்வாத் கிமபி ந நிபீடா³மபஜ⁴த ॥7॥
Meaning
ஸ: - he (Prahlaad),; ஶூலை:-ஆவித்³த:⁴ ஸுப³ஹு - pierced by tridents, many times; மதி²த: தி³க்³கஜ³-க³ணை:- - trampled upon by herds of huge elephants; மஹா-ஸர்பை:-த³ஷ்ட:- - bitten by huge snakes; அபி-அனஶன- - and also going without food (starving); க³ர-ஆஹார-விது⁴த: - tormented by poisoned food; கி³ரீந்த்³ர-அவக்ஷிப்த:- - thrown down from high mountains; அபி-அஹஹ - even then, what a wonder; பரமாத்மன்-அயி விபோ⁴ - O All Pervading Supreme Being!; த்வயி ந்யஸ்த-ஆத்மத்வாத் - unto Thee having surrendered himself; கிம்-அபி ந நிபீடா³ம்- - did not any kind of suffering; அபஜ⁴த் - feel;
Translation
O All Pervading Supreme Being! What a wonder! Though he was pierced with tridents many times, trampled again and again by herds of huge elephants, bitten by great serpents, starved, poisoned and thrown down from the mountain peaks,he did not feel any suffering as his mind was completely fixed on Thee.
ஶ்லோக:
தத: ஶங்காவிஷ்ட: ஸ புனரதிது³ஷ்டோஸ்ய ஜனகோ
கு³ரூக்த்யா தத்³கே³ஹே கில வருணபாஶைஸ்தமருணத் ।
கு³ரோஶ்சாஸான்னித்⁴யே ஸ புனரனுகா³ன் தை³த்யதனயான்
ப⁴வத்³ப⁴க்தேஸ்தத்த்வம் பரமமபி விஜ்ஞானமஶிஷத் ॥8॥
Meaning
தத: ஶங்கா-ஆவிஷ்ட: ஸ: புன:- - then being frightened, he again; அதி-து³ஷ்ட:-அஸ்ய ஜனக: - very cruel, his father,; கு³ரு-உக்த்யா - following the advice of the teacher; தத்-கே³ஹே கில - in his (teacher's) house, it appears; வருண-பாஶை:- - with ropes; தம்-அருணத் - tied him up; கு³ரோ:-ச-அஸான்னித்⁴யே - and when the teacher was not present; ஸ: புன:- - he (Prahlaada) again; அனுகா³ன் தை³த்ய-தனயான் - (with the ) Asura boys who were with him; ப⁴வத்-ப⁴க்தே:-தத்த்வம் - the real nature of devotion to Thee; பரமம்-அபி விஜ்ஞானம்- - and also the Supreme knowledge; அஶிஷத் - taught;
Translation
The very cruel father was frightened at this. At the advice of the teacher, Prahlaad was tied up with ropes at the teacher's house. But whenever the teacher was away, Prahlaad began to teach the Asura boys, who were with him, the doctrine of love for, and knowledge of Thee.
ஶ்லோக:
பிதா ஶ்ருண்வன் பா³லப்ரகரமகி²லம் த்வத்ஸ்துதிபரம்
ருஷாந்த:⁴ ப்ராஹைனம் குலஹதக கஸ்தே ப³லமிதி ।
ப³லம் மே வைகுண்ட²ஸ்தவ ச ஜக³தாம் சாபி ஸ ப³லம்
ஸ ஏவ த்ரைலோக்யம் ஸகலமிதி தீ⁴ரோயமக³தீ³த் ॥9॥
Meaning
பிதா ஶ்ருண்வன் - (the) father on hearing; பா³ல-ப்ரகரம்-அகி²லம் - (that) all the groups of boys; த்வத்-ஸ்துதி-பரம் - are intent on singing Thy praise; ருஷாந்த:⁴ - blinded by rage; ப்ராஹ-ஏனம் - asked him; குலஹதக க:-தே ப³லம்-இதி - O traitor of our race, who is your strength (support)?; ப³லம் மே வைகுண்ட:²- - My strength is Vishnu,; தவ ச - and your's,; ஜக³தாம் ச-அபி ஸ ப³லம் - of the whole universe also He is th strength,; ஸ ஏவ த்ரைலோக்யம் ஸகலம்- - He alone is the three worlds as a whole',; இதி தீ⁴ர:-அயம்-அக³தீ³த் - thus, that courageous and wise boy replied;
Translation
Hearing that all the boys were now singing Thy praise, Hiranyakashipu became blind with rage. He shouted at Prahlaad that the traitor that he was, who was his strength? That courageous boy replied that Lord Vishnu was his strength, in as much as He was also his (father's) strength and of the whole universe. Also that the three worlds were his manifestation indeed.

அரே க்வாஸௌ க்வாஸௌ ஸகலஜக³தா³த்மா ஹரிரிதி
ப்ரபி⁴ந்தே ஸ்ம ஸ்தம்ப⁴ம் சலிதகரவாலோ தி³திஸுத: ।
அத: பஶ்சாத்³விஷ்ணோ ந ஹி வதி³துமீஶோஸ்மி ஸஹஸா
க்ருபாத்மன் விஶ்வாத்மன் பவனபுரவாஸின் ம்ருட³ய மாம் ॥1௦॥
Meaning
அரே க்வ-அஸௌ க்வ-அஸௌ - Oh where is he? Where is he?'; ஸகல-ஜக³த-ஆத்மா ஹரி:- - the soul of all the worlds', that Hari; இதி - thus (saying); ப்ரபி⁴ந்தே ஸ்ம ஸ்தம்ப⁴ம் - struck at a pillar; சலித-கரவால: - brandishing his sword; தி³தி-ஸுத: - the son of Diti (Hiranyakashipu); அத: பஶ்சாத்- - thereafter (what happened); விஷ்ணோ - O Vishnu!; ந ஹி வதி³தும்-ஈஶ:-அஸ்மி ஸஹஸா - O Lord! I am not able to say immediately; க்ருபாத்மன் - O All merciful!; விஶ்வாத்மன் - O Supreme Aatman!; பவனபுரவாஸின் - O Resider of Guruvaayur!; ம்ருட³ய மாம் - deign to make me whole;
Translation
O where is he? Where is he? The soul of all the worlds who is known as Hari? The son of Diti asking struck the pillar brandishing the sword. O Vishnu! O Lord! What happened then I am unable to describe immediately. O All Merciful! O All pervading One! O resident of Guruvaayur! Deign to make me whole.
