ஶ்லோக:
ப்ராசேதஸஸ்து ப⁴க³வன்னபரோ ஹி த³க்ஷ-
ஸ்த்வத்ஸேவனம் வ்யதி⁴த ஸர்க³விவ்ருத்³தி⁴காம: ।
ஆவிர்ப³பூ⁴வித² ததா³ லஸத³ஷ்டபா³ஹு-
ஸ்தஸ்மை வரம் த³தி³த² தாம் ச வதூ⁴மஸிக்னீம் ॥1॥
Meaning
ப்ராசேத:-து - a son of Prachetas, indeed,; ப⁴க³வன்- - O Lord!; அபரோ ஹி த³க்ஷ:- - another Daksha (not Daksha Prajaapati); த்வத்-ஸேவனம் வ்யதி⁴த - Thy worship performed; ஸர்க-³விவ்ருத்³தி⁴-காம: - the species to multiply desirous; ஆவிர்ப³பூ⁴வித² ததா³ - Thou appeared then; லஸத்-அஷ்ட-பா³ஹு:- - with eight resplendent arms; தஸ்மை வரம் த³தி³த² - (and) gave the boon; தாம் ச வதூ⁴ம்- - and also that bride; அஸிக்னீம் - (named) Asikni;
Translation
The son of one of the Prachetas, another Daksha, indeed, desirous of multiplying the progeny, worshipped Thee. Then Thou appeared with eight resplendent arms and gave him a boon and also Asikni as wife.
ஶ்லோக:
தஸ்யாத்மஜாஸ்த்வயுதமீஶ புனஸ்ஸஹஸ்ரம்
ஶ்ரீனாரத³ஸ்ய வசஸா தவ மார்க³மாபு: ।
நைகத்ரவாஸம்ருஷயே ஸ முமோச ஶாபம்
ப⁴க்தோத்தமஸ்த்வ்ருஷிரனுக்³ரஹமேவ மேனே ॥2॥
Meaning
தஸ்ய-ஆத்மஜா:- - his sons; து-அயுதம்- - indeed ten thousand; ஈஶ - O Lord!; புன:-ஸஹஸ்ரம் - again (also) one thousand; ஶ்ரீனாரத³ஸ்ய வசஸா - by the advice of Shree Naarada; தவ மார்க³ம்-ஆபு: - took to Thy path (of meditation etc); ந-ஐகத்ர-வாஸம்- - (you) will not be residing in one place; ருஷயே - to the sage (Naarada); ஸ முமோச ஶாபம் - he (Daksha) gave the curse; ப⁴க்த-உத்தம:-து-ருஷி:- - highest of (Thy) devotees, the sage; அனுக்³ரஹம்-ஏவ மேனே - took it for a blessing.;
Translation
His eleven thousand sons, on the advice of Shree Naarada took to the path of devotion to Thee, to attain liberation. Daksha was displeased with Naarada and so pronounced a curse on him that he would not have any fixed place of residence. Sage Naarada, the highest of devotees, considered it only as blessing.
ஶ்லோக:
ஷஷ்ட்யா ததோ து³ஹித்ருபி⁴: ஸ்ருஜத: குலௌகா⁴ன்
தௌ³ஹித்ரஸூனுரத² தஸ்ய ஸ விஶ்வரூப: ।
த்வத்ஸ்தோத்ரவர்மிதமஜாபயதி³ந்த்³ரமாஜௌ
தே³வ த்வதீ³யமஹிமா க²லு ஸர்வஜைத்ர: ॥3॥
Meaning
ஷஷ்ட்யா தத: து³ஹித்ருபி⁴: - then by ( his) sixty daughters; ஸ்ருஜத: குல-ஔகா⁴ன் - (he) was multiplying the species; தௌ³ஹித்ர-ஸூனு:-அத² தஸ்ய - then one of his daughter's son's son; ஸ விஶ்வரூப: - that (named) Vishwaroopa; த்வத்-ஸ்தோத்ர-வர்மிதம்- - Thy protective hymn; அஜாபயத்-இந்த்³ரம்- - made Indra recite; ஆஜௌ - in a battle; தே³வ - O Lord!; த்வதீ³ய-மஹிமா - Thy glory; க²லு ஸர்வஜைத்ர: - indeed is victorious over all;
Translation
Then Daksha multiplied the species through his sixty daughters. His daughter's son's son named Vishwaroopa made Indra win the battle against the Asuras. Indra was provided protection and victory by learning from Vishwaroopa the hymn addressed to Thee (Naaraayana Kavacha). O Lord! Thy glory can indeed conquer all.
ஶ்லோக:
ப்ராக்ஶூரஸேனவிஷயே கில சித்ரகேது:
புத்ராக்³ரஹீ ந்ருபதிரங்கி³ரஸ: ப்ரபா⁴வாத் ।
லப்³த்⁴வைகபுத்ரமத² தத்ர ஹதே ஸபத்னீ-
ஸங்கை⁴ரமுஹ்யத³வஶஸ்தவ மாயயாஸௌ ॥4॥
Meaning
ப்ராக்- - once upon a time; ஶூரஸேன-விஷயே - in Shoorsena's kingdom; கில சித்ரகேது: - indeed, Chitraketu; புத்ர-ஆக்³ரஹீ ந்ருபதி: - desirous of a son, the king; அங்கி³ரஸ: ப்ரபா⁴வாத் - by sage Angirasa's blessings; லப்³த்⁴வா-ஏக-புத்ரம்- - getting one son; அத² தத்ர ஹதே ஸபத்னீஸங்கை⁴:- - then, there (the son) was killed by the other wives; அமுஹ்யத்-அவஶ:- - and overcome by grief, he fainted; தவ மாயயா அஸௌ - owing to the power of Thy Maayaa;
Translation
Once upon a time, in the kingdom named Shoorsena the king Chitraketu was desirous of getting a son. By the blessings of sage Angirasa he got a son. The child was killed by his other wives out of jealousy. The king fainted with grief owing to the power of Thy Maayaa.
ஶ்லோக:
தம் நாரத³ஸ்து ஸமமங்கி³ரஸா த³யாலு:
ஸம்ப்ராப்ய தாவது³பத³ர்ஶ்ய ஸுதஸ்ய ஜீவம் ।
கஸ்யாஸ்மி புத்ர இதி தஸ்ய கி³ரா விமோஹம்
த்யக்த்வா த்வத³ர்சனவிதௌ⁴ ந்ருபதிம் ந்யயுங்க்த ॥5॥
Meaning
தம் நாரத:³-து - him, Naarada then; ஸமம்-அங்கி³ரஸா - along with Angirasa; த³யாலு: - merciful (Naarada); ஸம்ப்ராப்ய - approaching; தாவத்-உபத³ர்ஶ்ய - then showed; ஸுதஸ்ய ஜீவம் - the son's soul; கஸ்ய-அஸ்மி புத்ர(:) இதி - whose son am I, thus; தஸ்ய கி³ரா - by his speech; விமோஹம் த்யக்த்வா - giving up delusion; த்வத்-அர்சன-விதௌ⁴ - in the ways of Thy worship; ந்ருபதிம் ந்யயுங்க்த - gave instructions to the king;
Translation
The merciful Naarada and sage Angirasa went to Chitraketu and showed him the soul of his dead son. The soul asked 'whose son am I?' These words dispelled the king's delusion. The sages then instructed him in the ways of Thy worship.
ஶ்லோக:
ஸ்தோத்ரம் ச மந்த்ரமபி நாரத³தோத² லப்³த்⁴வா
தோஷாய ஶேஷவபுஷோ நனு தே தபஸ்யன் ।
வித்³யாத⁴ராதி⁴பதிதாம் ஸ ஹி ஸப்தராத்ரே
லப்³த்⁴வாப்யகுண்ட²மதிரன்வபஜ⁴த்³ப⁴வந்தம் ॥6॥
Meaning
ஸ்தோத்ரம் ச மந்த்ரம்-அபி - hymns and Mantras; நாரத³த:-அத² லப்³த்⁴வா - from Naarada then receiving; தோஷாய ஶேஷ-வபுஷ: - for propitiation of (Thee) (who were) in the form of Aadishesha; நனு தே தபஸ்யன் - practising austerities to Thee alone; வித்³யாத⁴ர-அதி⁴பதிதாம் - the leadership of Vidyaadharas; ஸ ஹி ஸப்த-ராத்ரே லப்³த்⁴வா- - he obtained only in seven days; அபி-அகுண்ட²மதி:- - still dissatisfied; அன்வபஜ⁴த்-ப⁴வந்தம் - (he) continued to worship Thee;
Translation
Then receiving hymns and Mantras from Naarada, he practised austerities for propitiating Thee who were in the form of Aadishesha. Within seven days he obtained the leadership of the Vidyaadharas. Still dissatisfied, he continued to worship Thee with the same fervour.
ஶ்லோக:
தஸ்மை ம்ருணாலத⁴வலேன ஸஹஸ்ரஶீர்ஷ்ணா
ரூபேண ப³த்³த⁴னுதிஸித்³த⁴க³ணாவ்ருதேன ।
ப்ராது³ர்ப⁴வன்னசிரதோ நுதிபி⁴: ப்ரஸன்னோ
த³த்வாத்மதத்த்வமனுக்³ருஹ்ய திரோத³தா⁴த² ॥7॥
Meaning
தஸ்மை - to him (Chitraketu); ம்ருணால-த⁴வலேன - as white as a lotus stalk; ஸஹஸ்ர-ஶீர்ஷ்ணா - with a thousand heads; ரூபேண - in (such a) form; ப³த்³த⁴னுதி-ஸித்³த⁴க³ண-ஆவ்ருதேன - singing hymns of praises,by Sidhdhas, surrounded; ப்ராது³ர்ப⁴வன்-அசிரத: - quickly manifested; நுதிபி⁴: ப்ரஸன்ன: - with the hymns pleased; த³த்வா-ஆத்ம-தத்த்வம்- - imparting knowledge of self; அனுக்³ருஹ்ய - and blessing (him); திரோத³தா⁴த² - Thou disappeared;
Translation
Presently Thou revealed Thyself to him in Thy form of Aadishesha, with a thousand hoods and white like a lotus stalk,surrounded by bands of Sidhdhaas singing hymns of praise. Pleased with the hymns, Thou blessed him and imparted to him the knowledge of the self and then Thou disappeared.
ஶ்லோக:
த்வத்³ப⁴க்தமௌலிரத² ஸோபி ச லக்ஷலக்ஷம்
வர்ஷாணி ஹர்ஷுலமனா பு⁴வனேஷு காமம் ।
ஸங்கா³பயன் கு³ணக³ணம் தவ ஸுந்த³ரீபி⁴:
ஸங்கா³திரேகரஹிதோ லலிதம் சசார ॥8॥
Meaning
த்வத்-ப⁴க்த-மௌலி:-அத² ஸ- - the greatest of devotees ,he, then; அபி ச - and also; லக்ஷ-லக்ஷம் வர்ஷாணி - for many many years; ஹர்ஷுல-மனா - happily (blissfully); பு⁴வனேஷு - in all the worlds; காமம் ஸங்கா³பயன் - made to be sung; கு³ணக³ணம் தவ - Thy glories; ஸுந்த³ரீபி⁴: - by beautiful Vidyaadharis; ஸங்க-³அதிரேக-ரஹித: - without much sensuous attachment; லலிதம் சசார - happily wandered about;
Translation
This great devotee Chitraketu for many many years wandered about happily in all the worlds without much attachment. He led the troupe of beautiful Vidyaadharis and also caused Thy glories and excellences to be sung, to his hearts content.
ஶ்லோக:
அத்யந்தஸங்க³விலயாய ப⁴வத்ப்ரணுன்னோ
நூனம் ஸ ரூப்யகி³ரிமாப்ய மஹத்ஸமாஜே ।
நிஶ்ஶங்கமங்கக்ருதவல்லப⁴மங்கஜ³ாரிம்
தம் ஶங்கரம் பரிஹஸன்னுமயாபி⁴ஶேபே ॥9॥
Meaning
அத்யந்த-ஸங்க-³விலயாய - to rid (himself) of all sensuous hankerings; ப⁴வத்-ப்ரணுன்ன: நூனம் - prompted by Thee, it seems,; ஸ ரூப்யகி³ரிம்-ஆப்ய - he, reaching the Silver mountain (Kailaash); மஹத்-ஸமாஜே - in the assembly of sages; நிஶ்ஶங்கம்- - without any inhibition; அங்க-க்ருத-வல்லப⁴ம்- - who had seated his consort on his lap; அங்கஜ³ாரிம் தம் ஶங்கரம் - the destroyer of Kaamdeva, that Shankara; பரிஹஸன்- - ridiculing (him); உமயா-அபி⁴ஶேபே - was cursed by Umaa;
Translation
To rid himself completely of all sensuous hankerings, prompted by Thee, he once went to Mount Kailaash. There he saw the destroyer of Kaamadeva , Shankara, sitting in the assembly of sages with his consort Umaa seated on his lap without any concern. Chitraketu mocked at him and in turn was cursed by Umaa.
ஶ்லோக:
நிஸ்ஸம்ப்⁴ரமஸ்த்வயமயாசிதஶாபமோக்ஷோ
வ்ருத்ராஸுரத்வமுபக³ம்ய ஸுரேந்த்³ரயோதீ⁴ ।
ப⁴க்த்யாத்மதத்த்வகத²னை: ஸமரே விசித்ரம்
ஶத்ரோரபி ப்⁴ரமமபாஸ்ய க³த: பத³ம் தே ॥1௦॥
Meaning
நிஸ்ஸம்ப்⁴ரம:- - unperturbed; து-அயம்- - however, he (Chitraketu); அயாசித-ஶாப-மோக்ஷ: - did not ask for relief from the curse; வ்ருத்ராஸுரத்வம்-உபக³ம்ய - as vritraasura being born; ஸுரேந்த்³ர-யோதீ⁴ - against Indra fighting; ப⁴க்த்யா- - by his devotion; ஆத்மதத்த்வ-கத²னை: - and by imparting knowledge of the self; ஸமரே - in the battle,; விசித்ரம் - surprisingly,; ஶத்ரோ:-அபி ப்⁴ரமம்- - the delusion of the enemy also; அபாஸ்ய - removing; க³த: பத³ம் தே - reached Thy abode;
Translation
Unperturbed, Chitraketu did not ask for relief from the curse, and was born as Vritraasura. By his devotion, while fighting in the battle against Indra, he imparted the knowledge of the self to Indra and he removed the delusion of even his enemy. Thereby he reached Thy abode. What a wonder!

த்வத்ஸேவனேன தி³திரிந்த்³ரவதோ⁴த்³யதாபி
தான்ப்ரத்யுதேந்த்³ரஸுஹ்ருதோ³ மருதோபி⁴லேபே⁴ ।

தத்தாத்³ருஶஸ்த்வமவ மாம் பவனாலயேஶ ॥11॥
Meaning
த்வத்-ஸேவனேன - by worshipping Thee; தி³தி:- - Diti; இந்த்³ர-வத-⁴உத்³யதா-அபி - though wanting to kill Indra; தான்-ப்ரத்யுத- - them, instead,; இந்த்³ர-ஸுஹ்ருத:³ மருத:- - Indra's friends Maruts; அபி⁴லேபே⁴ - begot; து³ஷ்ட-ஆஶயே-அபி - even for evil mind persons; ஶுப⁴தா³-ஏவ - Thy worship; ப⁴வத்-னிஷேவா - gives good only; தத்-தாத்³ருஶ:-த்வம்- - Thou who are thus; அவ மாம் - protect me; பவன-ஆலய-ஈஶ - O Lord of Guruvaayur!;
Translation
Diti, the mother of the Asuras, worshipped Thee in order to have a son who would kill Indra, but instead gave birth to Maruts who became friends of Indra. By worshipping Thee, even an evil minded person receives good only. O Lord of Guruvaayur! Who are like that, deign to protect me.
